Source: Cubs close to deal for Shelby Miller. Braves would get Baez (after talks shifted from Soler).

Would prefer some of the other names being mentioned like Gausman.

But... Can you imagine beating the Cardinals for the next 6 years with Shelby Miller and Jason Heyward?

Miller had the 3rd best cutter last year behind Arrieta and Kluber and was tied with Mchugh for most expected strikes not given.

I really don’t want to make too much of this, because it’s not the sort of thing you can just expect, but there are some parallels between Miller and Jake Arrieta, right as he was preparing to break out. Arrieta has turned into one of the top five or so starting pitchers in the game, and no team would figure Miller’s in line to follow, but you could see him on a similar general path, where last year might’ve been kind of like Arrieta’s 2013. Miller has shown the signs, and now it’s time to put it all together. His repertoire has become similar to Arrieta’s. Arrieta throws his slider/cutter hybrid a bit faster, but Miller showed a velocity uptick in the second half. Maybe he won’t become a seven-win pitcher, but he could become a five-win pitcher. He seems to have what he needs.

I sometimes wonder if the front office isn't floating the occasional fake rumor to Wittenmeyer indirectly to screw with him. His columns are stupid, but he's been a solid reporter in the past and the last two years he's had a mix of getting stuff right and a few things hilariously wrong.

I think they're [expletive] with him. Usually our "almost trades" play out over an hour or so. This whole thing went thru the motions in 5 minutes.

Yeah you kinda have to think that, or they use him as a legit/verified source for getting rumors out to set up other deals for guys. Like if they really want Gausman they could go say hey look we were close to trading Baez for Miller, Miller is certainly better than Gausman but we will still give you Javy for him type thing.

There have been rumors all day that Cubs were close to something significant, but only denials thus far on anything done for Miller.

He was the one who said the Cubs were out on Lester right before Lester to the Cubs broke.

Here's the thibg; these kinds of back and forth, open closed trade talks have no doubt been going on since there have been GM meetings and winter Meetings. But what there hasn't always been is Twitter where every would be journalist can instantly share everything they happen to hear from a guy who knows a guy who met a guy who heard from a guy.

Journalists should still use the two source rule even on Twitter for things like that.

Lackey's douchiness will probably piss them off now too.

Should? Maybe. But in this day and age, that isn't realistic. We're talking about the media here. These guys are trigger happy for big news and make their living off of being the first guy to leak stuff to the internet. I guess sometimes being first takes priority over being accurate.
