With Zobrist's ability to play in the OF and Javy also getting some reps there, I would think it could be either/or. I wouldn't mind Villanueva getting a shot, personally.

I think it depends on who the CF is. In many of the permutations, a RH CF would be a good addition, Szczur is an okay 5th outfielder option but if you have Heyward playing a new position, Span's injury worries, or Parra's platoonyness(it's a word, look it up), then you'd prefer someone a bit better.

 

The wild card is if one of the current bench guys goes elsewhere. If Baez goes for a SP, Coghlan for salary relief, etc. In the former you almost certainly need a decent RH hitter because your only PH option from that side is Ross. Then there's also the consideration that there may only be 4 bench guys for a large chunk of the season, like last year.

Has anyone seen anything on if they view Zobrist as a viable SS option? Maddon played him about 30 games a year at the position and he was fine at it(especially as a backup option that can hit like Zobrist can), but he didn't play it at all last year when his D fell across the board statistically. If they do see him as a reasonable backup, then that opens up a lot of opportunities with Baez and the trade market that don't have the downside of having Brendan Ryan or the equivalent sticking on the MLB roster.

I listened to the press conference yesterday and Zo said something about being completely fine with playing OF, too, but never specifically mentioned any other IF spot. Of course neither he, nor Madden or Jed came out and said he couldn't/won't play SS. Just the impression I got. Assuming Javy makes the roster I can't imagine many scenarios in which he would be needed at SS. I'm also assuming Ryan will be DFA'ed at some point, but maybe that's wishful thinking.

All I take from that is another guy that really wanted to be here. He seems like a good dude too, its never lost on me how many easy to like guys we've got.(Heyward too) They easily cancel out Lackey. But man, it just seems like a great clubhouse mix on top of the unreal skill level.
