But OMC missed a thread in this current streak so he probably doesn't deserve to start.

I didn't miss a thread. The old man got impatient and started that game thread right as I arrived to start it.

Fred is tempting fate here!

Why don't you both start threads and the mods can merge them?

I'm very fine with trading spots with OMC to keep this train rolling.

I'm confused as to why it's your turn anyways. I thought we went with the same thread starter until the Cubs lost.

Time out.

[retreats to a smoke filled back room to settle this disagreement in true Chicago fashion]

There is a pistol hidden above the toilet in the men's restroom, fwiw

i think he was going by overall winning percentage for the year in determining the postseason order

I see. I guess that makes sense.

It's probably meaningless, but I envision the Pirates home crowd like the Cubs crowd in 2008. Just waiting for something bad to happen. Just score 3 runs and take it from there.

Also, I know the Cards stopped trying a week ago, but the Cubs ended the season just 3 games out of first place, which is the closest they'd been since May.

I can already hear the Pirates fans whining about the unfairness of having their season ended by facing Arrieta in a 1-game playoff.

I can't say their complaints will be unfounded though and I think either way this will probably be the beginning of the end of the 1-game format.

they have been for a while. cardinal fans have been too. and white sox fans.

and i don't think this will be the beginning of the end of anything, nor should it be. it's great the way it is.

Yeah, this type of thing isn't going to happen very often, and as has been brought up repeatedly, it's a vast improvement over a 97 win team not getting a chance to earn their way into a series.

The Cards didn't score a single run after clinching the division.

They won't touch the divisions or get rid of the 1 game, but I could see an NBA style re-seeding becoming a thing. Still two wild cards and division winners get an automatic berth, with the possibility that division winners have to be in the play-in game instead of the wild card teams.

that would ruin the added importance to winning the division, which was part of the motivation behind the current setup.

At the very least, MLB should allow wild card teams to have home field advantage if they eventually play a division winner with a lesser record.

Maybe they could take it one step further and determine first round matchups by records AFTER the wild card game has been completed and treating the wild card winner as any other playoff team.

That would be absurd. Win your division and you are in. Wild card is for non division winners.

i'd still like to see it be a 3 game series myself

that's less exciting and almost equally flukish.

I'm kind of confused as to why you're so passionate about this. Winning your division doesn't necessarily mean you are a better team or had a better season than another team from a different division. The whole "win your division, no excuses" thing seems like something an old time, meatball player would rant about right after he finishes talking about how the pitchers in his day were much tougher and weren't babied. This season is a unique case, obviously, but I could see it making MLB re-think things.

I think the never endin quest to tweak how the standings work is a pointless and fruitless endeavor. Divisions cannot be eliminated for a variety of largely business reasons. A wild card team winning more games than a division winner doesn't mean they were better. The NBA is in no way analogous and this is silly.

I know all that but at least playing a minimum of 2 games feels more like the playoffs than this format. If we somehow lost on Wednesday it wouldn't even feel like we were in the playoffs. For instance, the Indians made a playoff appearance a few years ago and lost...to me it feels like they haven't made the playoffs since 2007 or whatever was the last time.

All that said I think I prefer 1 game for several reasons. for one, like you said it doesn't make the result any less random especially if they do that double header thing that people are proposing. Second, it puts the WC team at even less of an advantage having to burn your best 2-4 starters instead of 1. Heck if the 3 game series was on Tues and Wed and the LDS starts on Friday you are likely matching up their 1st starter with your 4th and their 2nd with your 5th the first 2 games.
