haha, Liriano has a short-sleeved wind-breaker on while on the bases. Never seen that before. I wonder how much that's keeping him warm..

I'm surprised no one has brought up Theo and co not trading for a good starter at the deadline in awhile. Could have been useful.

I'm still annoyed by it, but for my money, they got away with it. They're in, the starter wouldn't have caught them up with St. Louis, and the playoffs are a crapshoot.

Remember when a bunch of people were like "Hammel always pitches 60% of a season awesome and then falls apart" and a few people spazzed out at the suggestion?

I don't remember this discussion at all honestly.

I just glanced at ERA's for him by month over his career(may be lazy of me, but I doubt the periphs are THAT much off). It doesn't seem like outside of last year(which was just a pathetic July that brought down his good August and September) and 2011, this is a true statement.

If the Cubs somehow manage to win the World Series with 2 reliable starters, albeit really good ones, it will be a pretty incredible story.

The Dodgers, Pirates, Royals, Rangers, and Blue Jays are all in a similar boat.

Yep. No team has ever done that before.

Plus, like, wouldn't the Cubs winning the World Series after more than 100 years make a pretty incredible story any way?

Which is also pretty incredible. Maybe all a team needs is 2 really good ones.

He was also awesome for 118 innings in 2012 and then pretty bad in 2013 for the Orioles.

Eh, if the idea is he gets tired as the season goes on, having an entire offseason of rest would quell those seasons for me. I'd just say he sucked in 2013.

I have no direct explanation for it, and maybe it's just a coincidence, but he's done it four times now. 120ish innings he looks amazing, then he's poop for awhile.

Yeah, it's odd. If anything though, the silver lining hopefully winds up seeing us grab 2 SP's this offseason and not just 1.

There's been no discussion by the Cubs of skipping Arrieta entirely if we lose today, has there?

I'd be in favor of skipping him, myself.

I want something like 2012, where we grabbed a bunch of swing guys too, only with a top guy better than Edwin Jackson.

The pitching hasn't been the issue the last week. This team needs to start scoring again. Would love to see a tiebreaker game between the Cards and Pirates. Then Jake vs a non ace

Yeah I think it's an absolute must the Cubs find two more starters this offseason, though I have no idea what the payroll flexibility and all would be

The 2016 pitching looks thin regardless of what the problem has been this week, though Hammel sucking yet again doesn't help.

No doubt. But Hammel giving up three runs isn't the total reason we are losing today. You have to score.
