Ugh... two doubleheaders in less than a week? Our rotation is going to be all messed up.

With an off day in between it doesn't really do anything to the rotation. Arrieta still pitches on Wednesday and they still need someone for game 2 on Tuesday. There's 13 relievers on the roster(including several options to start on Tuesday, namely Wood or Wada), so each individual day shouldn't be too rough on the pen either.

Arrieta and Hendricks tomorrow, Haren Saturday, TBD Sunday

Looks like Hammel will pitch in the DH Tuesday

Interesting, so they're moving the Wood/Wada/pen start to right before the off day. Not a terrible idea, although if they do that then they need to do it again right in the middle of the Cardinals series, right? Not so much a fan of that.

Yes this seems weird especially because we'd probably need to sweep the series to have any shot at the division. But I'm starting to wonder if Maddon is more concerned with catching the Pirates given his decision to move the spot starter to this weekend and again next weekend

Phillies have FINALLY fired Amaro as GM. The only thing more overdue now is Matt Williams getting fired in DC.

I realize that the Nationals have been hit hard with injuries this year, but the last week or so has really exposed Williams for the terrible manager he is. I would be shocked if he isn't fired soon after the season ends.

He's been exposed for a lot longer than the last week.

No question, but his ineptitude is getting a lot more national attention since they [expletive] the bed against the Mets.

Seems like a weird time to start a DH. Even if it's a really quick game, the second game won't start before 7:30 local time. Realistically, it won't start until 8:30 local time.

For anyone else like me looking for digestible steps on how the division race can be had, here you go. Remember, these are all unlikely, but if one happens then it raises the room for error in the ensuing steps.

Step 1: Sweep the double header, Cardinals lose. Arrieta and Hendricks v. Morgan and Asher is a good start. Lackey has lost both his starts against Cincinnati, so hopefully that continues. This cuts 1.5 games off the lead

Step 2: Before the start of the next Cardinals series, gain another 1.5 games. The Cubs have 6 games to the Cardinals 5, so something like 4-2 v. 2-3 or 5-1 v. 3-2 does the trick. Both of those steps mean the lead is 4 games entering the Cardinals series.

Step 3: Win 2 of 3 from St. Louis, preferably sweep. With a sweep that would mean a 1 game lead with 13 games to play, basically a toss up. Winning 2 of 3 means a 3 game lead. Still possible but much more faint.

Step 4: Get MLB to retroactively deem all Cubs-Cardinals games this year to be final after 7 innings.

I'd imagine its tough to get all of your staff in for a double header on such short notice

Step 5: Awaken in a cold sweat to unfamiliar yet strangely calming surroundings.

It wasn't long ago that the Phillies were had the Fecal League championship in the bag. But thanks to an improbable 5-24 anti-surge, The Braves are suddenly 1.5 games back, and the traditional Mad Dog 20/20 celebratory toast is no longer a sure thing. If anybody's in need of being swept, it's Cole Hamels Shane Victorino Chase Utley Jonathan Papelbon Ryan Howard Ryan Howard's carcass Ryan Howard's rotting carcass The Picked Over remains of Ryan Howard's rotting carcass and the Not So Fighin' Phils.

Yeah I popped in to check scores and I'm pissed I don't have a game to distract me at work like I thought I would
