I like our offense, but it's not 1927 Yankees good, is Theo trying to win?

All>>> I am comparing the Cubs (my favorite team) vs. the Cardinals (the team i Hate the most) we will never surpass them with trash heap bottom of the rotation starters... at least not in 2015. to me all other teams dont matter. the road to the world series is going through st. louis this year.

Why would you compare the Cubs to a historically great pitching staff? Setting the bar a little high don't you think?

One doesn't simply arrange a sub-3 ERA pitching staff at the drop of a hat. You either develop an amazing farm system, overpay for aces who will lose their luster in a few years, or trade from hitting depth to acquire young, cost-controlled pitchers. The first and third options take time to develop the necessary talent, and you don't want to lean too heavily on the second choice.

or you cheat

If you can count on winning maybe 20% of games started by Haren and Hendricks , it puts a lot of pressure on you to win every Arrieta and Lester start and most of Hammel's

Well, assuming we lose today, we'll be 16-14 in games started by Hendricks and Haren. So this is one of the dumbest things I've seen.

There's also the whole Hendricks and Haren aren't going to always be up against the ace of a >.500 team thing.

Last I checked Hendricks and Haren have been going against pretty much top of the line pitchers the past aside from the Lester vs. Kluber game this week most of the time our best pitchers are throwing we are facing the bottom half of the other teams rotation.

ah so that is sure to continue and obviously not pure happenstance

go look at all of the games this year and you tell me our best pitchers faced the other teams best pitchers more times than they faced the other teams junk pitchers..

matchups got funky after a couple of those cancelled games.. thats just the way it happened..

This cardinals staff is that kind of good, I was poking fun at sontensai.

Granted, there's a pitcher in it, but the 7-1 batters might the most barftastic group of hitters the Cubs have put out so far this year. Yeeeeesh.

wtf

The Cubs offense has been really hot in August. Our cushion in the 2nd wildcard spot was really pushed by the cubs hitting very well.

Maybe they could be the 1927 yankees in 2016 or 2017? not 2015.

Bottom line is the cubs pitching isn't nearly as capable as the top competitors, ie the cardinals.

who gives a [expletive] about any other team your chasing besides the best team, the top competitor. thats who you have to beat to go deep in the playoffs.

We are going to make the playoffs no matter how poorly Haren pitches and he obviously won't start a postseason game, so I really don't see the need for this angst.

Looking at the number Lieber was actually better than I remembered and was like league average (though his peripherals forecast doom)

what?

lieber was legitimately really [expletive] good

Yeah not sure what I was remembering there, ah well

He was excellent in his first stint with the Cubs. When he came back in '07 (?), I think he was pretty much done.

Yeah i was drawing a parallel with Haren and the 2008 Lieber, not his first stay

But even then he wasn't bad, by the numbers

I think you're insane, get in and we have a punchers chance against anyone. That's really more than you can ask for in the baseball format.

we still have a shot at the 1st wild card and maybe even the division and i hated the move to begin with (especially since we could've gotten kazmir), therefore i'm going to bitch about dan haren while also pointing out how ridiculous sontensei is

Counting today, Haren has faced Locke, Jungmann, Sale, Williams Perez, and Bumgarner

Since the deadline Hendricks has faced Garza, Cain, Samardzija, Miller, and Peavy

Please stop, you have no idea what you're talking about

Well, him pitching every fifth day instead of a Scott Kazmir might cost us the division. And also, Scott Kazmir would be nice to use after Arrieta and Lester in the playoffs.

Half the teams we played against in August dont even have an Ace besides the Giants and the Sox.

Sure he does. The Cubs should have done something to change time and alter the universe in a way where Arrieta and Lester were always facing the 1 and 2 of whoever the Cubs happened to be playing. I don't care what the excuse is, nobody is this stupid I think we all just keep feeding the troll.

Hmmm... it's almost as if half of the teams in all of baseball don't have an "Ace."

Making moves at the deadline to try and win the division would have been ludicrous. We've gone an insane run in August and we're still at 3.4% on FanGraphs.

I don't think there's enough of a difference between Kazmir and Hammel to justify the cost of upgrading the 3rd starter, not to mention the fact that we'll be underdogs in a one-game playoff to even make that 3rd starter necessary.
