i remember we were talking about correa as a possibility back in 2012

i can't even fathom what that would be like right now

Matt Garza had too good a year in 2011

cost us Carlos Correa

Yeah but that means we would've missed out on Almora

Yeah, I remember reading about his impressive workout at Wrigley. Someone refresh my memory, but I feel like after we drafted Almora at #9 there were comments from the FO that Albert was really #1 on their board. Yeah, that might have just been something they made up after the fact, but they were pretty honest about Aiken being ahead of Schwarber on their board last year, for example. It would be believable with Appel's asking price, Buxton's crummy HS competition, and Correa wasn't thought of as elite. So maybe it's better this way that we didn't have the opportunity to pass on him..

Oh yeah, Kyle Schwarber. He's good.

Almora went 6th, Javy was 9th. They certainly acted as if they loved Almora, but I don't remember them saying they'd have taken him 1st. They gushed over Correa on his Wrigley visit, I remember thinking he's their top guy based on a few comments.

There's a story I saw recently on Twitter that said when Theo went to see Schwarber, as soon as he saw the short, compact swing....He told the scouts there with him to go home, we've got our guy. Don't remember which Cubs Twitter guy brought it up, it'd be cool if it were true.

The coolest thing about that BABIP chart is that Anthony Rizzo is having his monster season with a .294 BABIP, so he could get even better without even improving his play at all with just a few more balls dropping for him.

The latter story was told by Sutcliffe on Wednesday's ESPN broadcast.

So it's almost certainly not true.

I can't remember, does the shift depress BABIP?

and his HR/FB is 50th of 156 qualified hitters (68th percentile) so he's not coasting on an anomalous rate of FBs leaving the field either

he's just a monster

"Fangraphs looked at the 44 players that hit against the shift at least 100 times in 2014 and found that their BABIP against the shift was .281 and with no shift their BABIP was .291"

last year Rizzo had 20 pts higher BABIP hitting against a shift (219 Batted Balls into Shift)

It's insulting to the universe that you have Alcantara and Javy in the same sig as Lord Schwarbs

Schwarber's batting line extrapolated over 162 games:

.294/.392/.579, 43 HR, 132 RBI, 145 R, 311 TB, 165 OPS+, 81 BB, 175 K's

How come Rizzo is cut off from the other good guys by a Mt. Rushmore of suck? Seems pretty mean.

I believe it was when they debuted/were expected to debut, with the exception of Rizzo/Starlin.

I really think Schwarber winds up catching part time. Maybe 60 games a year or so. It'll allow us to not carry the no-bat C that's a horrible PH and give us the ability to have another bat on the bench. With the way Maddon uses guys and how he uses the pen, giving him even more versatility just seems like a great thing. Plus, it placates Schwarber's "want" to catch and it preserves him somewhat at the same time.

We're so far from a finished product, but I suspect our bench will eventually be full with guys that play multiple positions and play perfectly into Maddon's "mad scientist" type approach.

i really wonder if we'd have the nerve to do that without also carrying a third catcher.

Correct. Rizzo goes first because he's the bestest.

My problem with having Schwarber catch part time is that that then means we will need to have another catcher also catching part time, preferably who doesn't suck. Is Montero going to be willing to only catch half our games?
