1) he's not benched for the rest of the season

2) We're not about to just let a team take over his salary

3) Plenty of teams need SS, he's a solid bounce back type we'll be able to move in the offseason-not for a great return obviously, but I'd bet we'll be able to get a guy or two that help out the ML roster.

:good: Thank you for providing a voice of reason. :)

baez' numbers in AAA aren't any different than they were last year when he got called up and flailed around like a blind kid.

Yup. Plus now it's the question of whether or not Baez can outperform Coghlan this season if they were to bring him up.

Maybe, but I just don't think we can be certain. That's a not-insignificant amount of guaranteed money for a bounce-back guy. I think there's a real chance he won't be claimed on waivers and if he were, we'd think about letting him go for free.

Really? I listed the teams that need SS somewhere rather recently, it made me change my mind about that scenario. I know we're not going to get a haul for him, but I do think the scarcity at the position will get us enough interest that we'll get something out of him.

Needing a SS isn't the same as "willing to commit $40m to a guy coming off a -1 WAR year, his second terrible year in the last three."

Waaaaay too early options for the offseason....Which door do you take?

Door 1- Heyward with Carrasco, Teheran, or Ross-Castro and Javy are dealt(not necessarily in same deal) La Stella/Coghlan at 2B

Door 2- Price and Fowler with Castro dealt

Door 3- Kendrick, Span, and Samardzija with Castro dealt

Door 4- Zobrist, Austin Jackson, and Zimmermann with Castro dealt

Door 5- Heyward and Kazmir, Castro dealt and Javy at 2B

I honestly have no idea which door I'd take, but I think these are relatively decent examples of the different paths we can take this offseason.

I actually wouldn't give up anything for him myself. I guess I'm relying on scarcity and desperation here-it'll be interesting to see unfold at least. At any rate, I don't see us dumping him this month.

The FO has already implied that Baez will be a September call up and won't be coming up any time soon. Also the difference between Baez's numbers now vs. last year is that Baez's swing mechanics have changed dramatically for the better and he's still working out the kinks of his new approach so his positive numbers this year are more encouraging, not to mention the adversity he's had to face this season with his sister's untimely death and the hand injury.

Every player in history who has ever struggled has come back with "new swing mechanics" and somebody has found something to be encouraged by in their AAA numbers.

I mean, I probably worded that wrong, but I'd be very surprised if he doesn't start 25-30 games the rest of the way. Part time starter seems like a cop out, but I guess that's what I'd think he is the rest of the REGULAR season. Unless he's scorching hot though, I don't think he'd be a starter in the playoffs though, if we're healthy.(Today's lineup seems like the best we can put out there)

Edit-I may even go as far as to say I'm 50/50 on him being on our active playoff roster.(dependent on Javy)

La Stella/Coghlan as primary 2B isn't an acceptable outcome for the offseason, and I like La Stella more than most everyone. If you trade Castro and Baez, you're adding another middle infielder.

The more time Castro is on the bench, the less we'll get for him in a trade. Add that to his salary and you'll be lucky to get a middle-level prospect or two.

Him sitting for a third of a year or whatever role he has isnt going to affect what other teams see him as one way or the other. Either they'll show interest or they won't. The time for trading for prospects is done, if we deal him, I'd be shocked if its not for a major league return. Other teams have surpluses and/or guys that need a change of scenery too.

Lots of teams may show interest in Castro, but the interest level will depend on the price. If you can get him for next to nothing, you'll have teams lined up. If you want a useful ML piece or a high ranking prospect, there will be a lot less teams.
