The plastic bag that the paper bag was in? Why would that surprise you? If somebody showed up with a purported rape kit it would make sense to me for the lawyers to place it in a plastic bag.

This is a circus, the DA holding up a box and saying "THIS IS A RAPE KIT, AS YOU CAN SEE IT IS IN A BOX. RAPE KITS ARE NOT IN BAGS NOR DO THEY INVOLVE A BAG"

This alone is not a circus. The drama of the last few days is. Never thought I'd be watching a press conference where the DA is holding up a paper box and examining that rape kits are in boxes not bags. Just bizarre all around.

At first the DA made it seem like the accused's lawyers originated the bags. Later he clarified.

 

Why no one who is familiar with rape kits in NY didn't pipe up and say they are stored in boxes surprises me

With a reputation of a DA who will only bring slam dunk cases to trial, I'm not sure that says nearly as much as you are implying.

With a reputation of a DA who will only bring slam dunk cases to trial, I'm not sure that says nearly as much as you are implying.

 

The reputation was also that he would submit almost everything to the grand jury so as to not take any blowback for deciding not to submit certain cases. I hadn't heard that rep that you cite -- though I imagine the two statements aren't incompatible.

It matters in that it made the whole investigation look like a total clown show, and it wasn't.

 

Legally, yeah, it doesn't matter. But if the case was already slip sliding away, and the mother was trying to "rescue" it, then this would make a little more sense.

It matters to the extent that it took an unconfirmed case out of no comment by anybody stage to daily press conferences by the attorneys who are now trying the case in the press.

Early on somebody reported that cops had a nickname for him that was something like slam dunk, because he would only go after easy targets to keep his shooting percentage high.
