I also read somewhere that Utley has repeatedly told management in the past that he would invoke his no-trade clause to veto any trade, although he softened his stance slightly earlier this year.

If this is the end of the road for him, I have to assume that he'd want a chance to win. And it's not like he'd have to relocate his family.

This seems like a scorching hot take. He's already won a WS; maybe he just wants to finish his career on the same team.

I suppose there's something to be said for playing your entire career with one team, especially these days. But considering what the Phillies have become, that could make it more depressing. Jeter, for example, may not have gone out on one of the better Yankees teams, but at least they were kinda-sorta contending until the end of the season. Phillies are pretty much waiting for the clock to wind down.

Plus if they keep him and he does well they don't draft Bryant.

They'll draft high regardless, because being terrible for multiple seasons isn't something that Amaro can avoid at this point. His reticence to sell his aging veterans 2-3 years ago has all but guaranteed that.

I don't think they'd get [expletive] for him at this point anyway, so they might as well let him finish his career in Philly.

hmm but didn't utley say he will invoke his no trade rights?

that said i hope we can swap for castro that would be nice.

Utley evidently has an 11 mill club option for next year. That becomes somewhat interesting, in my mind. If the Phillies would kick in for some anyway. May be their best bet to get something of use for him, at least.

I heard it was between 5 and 11 million, but I don't know what the stipulations are.

that Fangraphs article analyzing his swing gives me *some* optimism, but I'm still pretty sure he's cooked as a player. I dunno.

I'd take him on if it's real real cheap.

Guaranteeing Utley any money for 2016 seems like a big gamble, you'd have to be real certain that this season is a fluke/injury issue and not the end of the line. If it works out(especially at a lower dollar amount like 6-8 million) it could be a nice win(no need to worry about 2B if Castro is a goner, can more easily shop Baez, etc), but it's a pretty decisive move to make.

I don't really want him anymore. Maddon can make it work with Coghlan, Castro, Baez. And I really just want Starlin to be a positive contributor to the first good team he's ever been on. This 4-5 he's on is enough to get me hopeful again.

These are essentially my exact same feelings.

Plus it'll be really awkward if he sucks right off the bat and they end up benching him. I don't know. Whatever.

Utley: .208 AVG, .273 OBP, .313 SLG, .586 OPS, .255 wOBA

Castro: .242 AVG, .276 OBP, .309 SLG, .585 OPS, .254 wOBA

I want really no part of Utley on this team. I'd love, say, 2011 Utley, but then I'd love 2011 Castro also.

yes, i think everyone here is well aware that chase utley had a bad first half

the belief is that he was hurt and iirc also had something going on with his swing, both of which are apparently resolved. he was a 4.5 win player just last year.

and for what little the small sample size is worth, he's been raking since coming back (enough that that line was .179/.257/.275 before he did)
