Since the F/O couldn’t get a good deal for some big names, I am happy they upgraded the team without giving much up.

The minor leaguers that got traded will either all be Rule 5 Eligible or FA after this year (for lake if he isn’t on 25 man by end of the year he was FA anyways)

New Players via Trade

Haren’s basically free, no salary| Better than Roach/Beeler/Richards/Wada

Hunter is decent 7th inning type guy.

Guys coming back from DL/Minors

Baez

Montero

La Stella

Wada

Including the trades lets summarize where the team stands roster wise. This is just my guess, so feel free to post up your guess as well!

Haren replaces Medina on roster

Hunter replaces Rowen

Wada DFA to Iowa

But they still have 14 pitchers, a short bench (11), and 3 catchers!

So I imagine Teagarden is going to be the first to go when one of LaStella/Baez/Montero are ready.

The second will probably be Herrera

I guess the cubs keep Montero on the DL until September when the rosters expand

Anyways at what point does the Soriano experiment end? Since he is Joe’s “trusted men from Tampa” does he stay anyways?

When Baez comes up where does he play? Where does Castro go?

Baez will prolly play 2nd like a boss. Russell to SS and Castro goes to hell.

does joe have the nuts to do that tho?

It will be interesting on schwarber catching days however.

Maybe KB plays left and Baez at 3b on those days?

Seriously, why are some of you still questioning whether or not they'll bench Castro? They were just all but openly trying to trade him as hard as they possibly could. Castro torpedoed his claim to start any position a long time ago and held onto it as long as he did because there was nobody else and they were hoping he'd show signs of anything to either justify keeping him or improve his trade value. That didn't happen and he ended up just getting worse to the point that his July was jaw-droppingly bad. Benching him because Baez isn't any kind of question; it's simply inevitable. He'll just move to the bench and that's that.

The alternative has been Jonathan Herrera as an everyday player. That's not stubbornness, that's sanity.

Yeah, no kidding; people talk like he was trotting him out there when better options existed and they didn't. Now they do. They have little to no reason to keep playing Starlin as a starter once Baez comes up unless he somehow completely turns it around and starts playing out of his mind, which seems pretty damn unlikely to happen.

Going to be pretty interesting tomorrow to see what they do.

They only have 1 spot open on the 40-man (1 spot on the 25 also) and have to add Haren, Hunter, and Richard. Medina is gone, but do they DFA him, again? Then I'd guess Eric Jokisch (is he really on the 40?) is gone. But who goes off the 25-man besides Medina?

Soriano isn't going anywhere, and I don't think anyone else in the current pen is either (all would require DFA or DL anyway). The easy move is to send Teagarden down. But leaves you with a 3 man bench, though just for tomorrow's game. But it leaves 2 catchers for at least 10 days if there are no injuries.

Today- Hunter and Haren on roster, Medina DFA

Tomorrow- Richard on roster, Teagarden down

Monday- Richard DFA, Baez on roster

Starters- Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Haren

Bullpen- Rondon, Strop, Motte, Hunter, Soriano, Grimm, Russell, Wood

OF- Coghlan, Fowler, Denorfia, Soler

IF- Bryant, Baez, Castro, Russell, Herrera, Rizzo

C- Schwarber, Ross

Things really get interesting when injured guys are ready. Wada can't be left in the minors, I don't believe. His rehab will be done, then he has to be on the 25-man or released. LaStella is rehabbing now, and should be ready to go by Sept. Not sure when his rehab is done, but if done before the end of the month, he'll have to be on the 25. Then there's Neil Ramirez and Montero, who could also be ready before September.

I suspect Wada is going to end up replacing Russell. Russell has had a nice season, but Wada is the most stretched out and competent SP option if anyone goes down, so I can't see him being released.

If that is the plan, then I think Russell is a DFA candidate, and it can be done for Richard to avoid the short bench situation.

Given LaStella's issues on the last, he probably just gets stays on rehab until rosters expand. If he's ready before that, Herrera may get demoted for a week. LaStella will also need a 40-man spot since he's on the 60-day DL, but someone like Schlitter can be painlessly removed once the spot is needed.

Did anyone else know that Delmon Young's been a free agent since July 9? Could be a useful bat off the bench, no?

Correct, no is the answer.

Reports that Montero is expected back on Thursday. So you're probably just looking at someone like Szczur for 3 days on the bench.

this is fast, isn't it? seems like an obvious "don't want to lose my job to the rookie i'll rush back and oops i'm way more injured now" situation.

It is fast. Early word was he was out 6 weeks and I think I remember it being said that might have been optimistic.

Montero back on Thursday? So, do they dare send Schwarber down? I don't see any way Schwarber and Montero can co-exist on the same non-expanded roster for a whole month. Even if you put Schwarber in LF, Coghlan has done nothing to warrant sitting the bench.

Thursday makes almost a month since he was first hurt. That's a bit faster than expected, but when you're talking about a sprained/jammed thumb I think you're more likely to see that type of turnaround than if he had a muscle injury.

They've already said Schwarber is staying up. They can make due having one of those 3 sit most games for 3ish weeks. We're getting later in the season where the occasional rest day is more important too, plus they can be as conservative with Montero as needed with this arrangement.

Yah then if the injury gets worse and he is out a long time were stuck with the contract going into 2016.. what 13 mil? I bet schwarber gets alot of lf down the stretch

I'm guessing it'll be Lester/Ross, Arrieta/Montero, Hammel/Schwarber, Hendricks/Schwarber, and Haren/Montero.

Start Schwarber 2 of his 3 games not catching in LF. Coghlan gets the 2 games Schwarber catches and the 1 game Schwarber has off.

I kinda like La Stella's stats during rehab

.333/.429/.500 no K's

Dont expect the SLG to be that good small sample but no K's in 18 AB's is pretty sexy.

Who will he replace on the roster? Only guy seemingly expendable is Herrera, who Maddon loves using. Can LaStella just stay in the minors or is he out of options?
