Lester showing no sympathy for the ump

Is that who got hurt? Gamecast just said injury delay.

Lester fouled one that bounced up and hit the ump in the neck

Thanks, I assumed the worst. Glad it was just an ump.

I always forget how much luck is involved with baseball. Pretty much more than any other sport.

football

especially with the small sample schedule

Aside from fewer games, how do you figure?

fewer games in which things like fumbles, pick 6's, and other fluke plays completely reverse outcomes

which is how a shitty team like the 2001 bears ends up with a first round bye

Yeah seriously. If anything, because baseball plays a 162 game schedule, any lucky or unlucky events are minimized over a season. There's some variance between lucky and unlucky teams but not as much as football.

That is until you get into the playoffs where it becomes a complete crapshoot.

I will critically defend the 2001 Bears as a Good team.

Clearly not great but like, they were decent.

That team was one of the biggest flukes in sports history

No more of a fluke than Eli"s Giants SB teams, or the Ravens. The Bears lost to a better team in the Super Bowl that year.

I agree it evens out over 162 games, but you said especially with the schedule. I think one game of baseball is much flukier than one game of football.

Guess I should have clarified. I was talking about one stand-alone game. Of course luck is more consequential in any sport that has fewer games.

In other words, I feel like there are more lucky/unlucky things that happen in 1 baseball game than there is in 1 football or 1 hockey game.

The 2001 Chicago Bears allowed the fewest amount of points in the NFL, and scored the 11th most. They were a pretty decent team.

Of course they deserved to get swatted in the divisional round like they did.

We're talking about the 2001 team. The 2006 team was legit.

Well IIRC they had a bottom 3 SOS, won 2 games on pure miracles, beat a 2-14 team at home by a score of 13-10, were a game worse than their record and failed to make the playoffs (or even come close) in the 6 seasons prior and 3 seasons after, suggesting they played over their heads in 2001 IMO.

OK, Joe, maybe don't call a hit-and-run EVERY time Castro is up with a runner on 1st...especially if there's already one out.

I like how everyone is in agreement that luck in one game of baseball plays a huge role but that things stabilize over time. These are the same people flipping their [expletive] when the cubs go down 2-1 in a single game.

last 5 balls hit by the cubs have left the bat at 99, 95, 103, 102 and 97 mph. williams really is not fooling anybody now.

and yet he's still thrown a quality start through 6 and only at 83 pitches.

It seems like you don't actually like it.
