Hamels is a stud on an ass-end team desperate to free up money and run by a moron. It's not outlandish at all to think that he could he had without being pushed over a barrel.

I don't think the Phillies are desperate to free up money.

It's Randy Wells all over again.

Not by your McDuck-ian standards, no.

Exactly my thought. And Cole Hamels is Matt Garza.

If your trading Schwarber for pitching GET SONNY GREY, k thanks

Giving up on Sale?

I'd take sale but i thinks sonny grey wont require bryant/russell but sale would.

Hamels' top age-specifc comps on BR: Peavy, Drabek, Appier, Haren, Rijo

Number of 3+ win seasons combined from those comps after age 32: two

Aren't BR comps kinda worthless?

They aren't surgically accurate, but they are objective, which I thought was better than going down the road of arbitrary comps. If you want recent guys who have matched Hamels' bar for performance and consistency, you get guys like Sabathia, Haren, and Verlander, and depending on how flexible you want the criteria to be, guys like Wainwright, Lee, and Shields.

Going to go with no on that one. I'd guess the league figures out Hendricks' 89 MPH fastball and changeup combo first.

I'm with TT.

I like Hendricks, but I guess I just figured everyone thought he'd have a pretty short shelf life.

How much further can his velo go down? He is what he is for the forceable future. He can spot all of his pitches and change speeds very well. He may never be a a great pitcher, but he's already a decent pitcher. That's my thinking on Hendricks.

Oh, I don't think he sucks or anything; I just didn't think anyone saw him as a legitimate long term option or anything. See what you can get out of him for 3-4 years, if you can, and move on.

Holy [expletive] I can't wait until some other team trades for Hamels. The packages keep getting more ridiculous for a 31 year old who is being paid pretty much FA prices, with the big benefit being he's only signed for a few more years. I'm not interested in giving the Phillies Baez, let alone Schwarber. I'll take Samardzija on a 5/100 deal in FA and keep all my prospects, thank you.

i strongly suspect samardzija hates the cubs and wouldn't consider signing here unless the other options were terrible in comparison.

Hamels doesn't stop them from signing Samardzija at 5/100 (a solid idea, my favorite FA SP option without handing out the biggest SP FA contract in history), and Samardzija doesn't help the Cubs win and make lots of money in 2015.

They should do both, win now, make money, and eventually buy newer and shinier prospects to anoint before their time.

You're kidding yourself if you think they're going to pay lester,Samardzija and Hamels. Just the same as people who want Hamels and then Price/Zimmerman/Cueto. Theoyer isn't going to dedicate 400+M to 30+ year old pitchers.

That a pitcher as good as Hamels is only making $23.5 million the next 3 years and $20 million the 4th if the team keeps him is a damn good thing.

Yeah, they're not spending that much on 3 pitchers. One, they wouldn't put that many eggs in on guys that are of that age range. Two, PTR.

I figure they'll get a Kazmir level type soon and then go after one of Price/Zimmermann in the offseason. With the only possibility of adding another TOR type being a trade involving Castro or Javy+ for a young guy with the potential to turn into one.
