I really do not get the faith in the "he sucked at every level then improved" argument.

It is a demonstration of his ability to make adjustments.

Adjustments to minor league pitchers.

Adjustments to the best pitchers he's seen yet. And he's done it at every level he's been to outside of the majors to this point.

which all means very little in comparison to just his overall body of work. The he always sucks early then gets better narrative is just a built in excuse to suck early and act as if it doesn't matter.

Everyone wants to trade for Hamels, but they expect the Cubs to give up nothing big.. If you want Hamels, you're gonna have to part with something you don't necessarily want to part with.

I didn't necessarily want to part with Castro but considered him an option in a trade, as well as other names like Vogelbach, Baez, Almora and more.

I don't want to trade for Hamels.

You have to ask yourself - why are you willing to trade Vogelbach, Baez and Almora? Because they aren't that good! Hamels is a freakin stud! You want to trade Castro because he's below average this year? If he was hitting .310 with 10 home runs, I bet you wouldn't trade him then. Why is it so hard for people to understand that people don't want your crap for their valued pieces any more than you want their crap.

If we don't get Hamels, that's fine, but those same people who were saying "I wouldn't give up anything good to get Hamels" can't be bitching down the stretch run about how our pitching isn't good enough. If you're saying be patient, I can respect that, but if you're telling me the Cubs should get Hamels and give up "Baez and Almora," you're an idiot.

Hamels is a stud on an ass-end team desperate to free up money and run by a moron. It's not outlandish at all to think that he could he had without being pushed over a barrel.

Castro for Hamels was discussed long before 2015 started.

Those guys are highly rated prospects.

Thanks for explaining how trades work though downsr, really helpful info.

Yeah, meatballs rant about Castro like he's baseball cancer, but other GM's are going to see a 25-year-old player signed to a very team-friendly deal who has had a lot of success already to this point in his career. No, it wouldn't be selling as high as they could have, but plenty of teams are going to look at his struggles as something they think they can fix. And Baez stills holds plenty of appeal; yeah, his risk is huge, but the potential reward is also huge. Yes, players like Almora and Vogelbach are add-ons as opposed to main pieces, but Castro and Baez are players the Cubs should rightly expect a damn good return on despite their recent struggles.

The Phillies aren't stupid - they'll get a top prospect or 2-3 for Hamels. I don't blame the Cubs for not doing it with the future in mind, but those who lobby for Baez, Almora, and Vogelbach - well DUH.. I'm sure we would do that trade.. It has huge upside for us and tons of risk for the Phillies. Some fans are just completely clueless.

If you're the Phillies, Schwarber is an extremely attractive piece as they already have one of the best up and coming hitters in baseball as their 3rd basemen in Franco. Trading for young pitching is very dangerous and the Phillies can't really afford to miss - so to speak - on this Hamels deal whenever it happens. Schwarber is by no means a for sure thing, but getting him would be huge for them.

On the Cubs side - the Cubs have 4 needs in my eyes as a fan in ranking of most importance:

Big-time starter - Lester hasn't been an ace yet this year, Arietta has been more like one. If you add Hamels to the mix you now have a very good 1-2-3 punch and a back end of the rotation that fills out very solid as well.

Bench help - we have all seen our share of Herrera, Ross, and Baxter this year. At times these fellas can be OK and serve somewhat of a purpose but all would probably be average at best players at the AAA level. My proposal was to add Andres Blanco - a player with decent speed, some experience and a good versatile bat.

Bullpen - our bullpen has been solid of late but there are still uncertainties and I think that's because there's too many floating pieces and uncertain roles - which can be good and bad. Adding a guy like Papelbon to the back end would move everyone else down and allow the other guys to fit into their roles. Also would give us a closer with experience in big spots - which does have value.

Big bat - while the Cubs have a very nasty upcoming offense - they don't have a veteran big bat which could be helpful down the stretch. Not something they "need" but would be a very comforting addition. Adding a bat like Carlos Gonzalez (injury free) would be huge - not likely, but huge.

As others have said, CarGo is not a big bat this year. But the bench thing is overblown. The Cubs bench is terrible right now, because of injuries. It was projected by this point in the season to have Olt, LaStella, Denorfia, and Coghlan (if Baez was healthy, Bryant is the LF right now), with Alcantara still waiting in the wings.

I don't think that negates the need to improve the bench

Yeah, Olt would likely just suck all over again, Al Contra is best not even being talked about right now and Soler coming back really just pushes Denorfia to the bench sometimes since he'll be platooning with Coghlan. The bench blooooooooows.

I don't care who is hurt, isn't hurt - our bench sucks and that's what it is. La Stella would be a good bench piece but I think he was on Malaysian Flight 370 - pretty much haven't seen him since. All those other guys are just guys who have been decent or good in the minors but haven't done [expletive] in the majors hence the reason they are in the minors again (or hurt).

Denorfia and Coghlan haven't done anything in the majors?

Posted

I think Coghlan is a lot better than his numbers show. I loved watching him hit last year. He's miserable against decent lefties, but as a platoon left fielder, he's not great but he gets the job done. Denorfia is a solid bench player but he's been more of a starter on different spots of the field with platoons (Coghlan) and the injury to Soler. So ultimately - you have either Coghlan or Denorfia starting and have 1 decent bench player right now and if they are both starting which has been the case with the current roster at times, our go-to guy is Baxter.

I love the idea of trading for Hamels but have very little interest in using Schwarber in that deal.

Only way it's acceptable is if the Phillies are paying enough of Hamels salary that the Cubs could turn around and add another starter in free agency.

I think you are overvaluing the Phillies bargaining power at the moment. To take on that crazy contract means accepting a lesser product in return. If the Phillies are picking up a significant portion of the contract, then I agree it will take a special player.

Posted

If the Cubs can get Hamels and only pay him half of his contract and have to give up Schwarber - that allows them to add this fall to an already nasty rotation. To have Hamels around $10 million per year and knowing the Phillies have voiced that they are willing to eat part of his contract if that sweetens the return - that's a huge selling point for the Cubs.

Hamels, Lester, Arietta, Hammel, Hendricks this year.

Price, Hamels, Arietta, Lester, Hammel next year.

I could also see the Phillies wanting a guy like Hendricks back in a Hamels trade, which scares me because Hendricks could be a really good #3 guy when it's all said and done but it'd be tough to turn down an ace at a discounted salary.
