Even whatever musing I had about power pitching arms and high contact guys maybe give tiny slight edges in the playoffs, its still fundamentally a crapshoot and the main goal is getting in, so if they can field a team that can get in the playoffs repeatedly over the next 5-10 years, that's the best they can do to give themselves a shot.

It's possible they'll go all Atlanta Braves on you, but I don't really see a chance for this team to drop out of the playoff race given how much talent and how good the management has been.

So if they drop from 97 wins to 93 wins or whatever, who cares.

Let's use the combined win total of 101 as the water mark

90 wins + WC+ Lds+ Lcs + WS

91 wins + Lds+ Lcs + WS

94 wins + WC + Lds + Lcs

95 wins + Lds + Lcs

So yea, lots of fun 101+ win total scenarios.

The only thing that would actually bum me out is if they trade Schwarber because they can't find a position for him

I seriously doubt this happens. He's still very much developing as a defensive player. Guy's been a professional athlete for all of 16 months. He'll get better on defense.

I don't think they would trade Schwarber, but he was born to be a DH.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but what about Schwarber for someone like Stanton? Or does Stanton even rank that much better than Schwarber in the OF?

sorry to bring negativity to the positivity thread, but i'm getting sick of seeing, "don't worry, this will be the WORST cub team of the next 5-7 years."

no it won't.

If this team makes a world series, just makes a world series in the next 5-7 years, i will look back fondly at this year.

i honestly wouldn't be all that surprised if it is the worst Cubs team for the next 3-4 years; i say that though, treating this team as the 90-win pythag it was

I agree.

Now I would have loved to see this team go to and win a WS this year, and I'm not saying I would rather it happen in five years, but just think how much more we will appreciate this particular team as they get better and better. Starting with their youth and seeing all of them bloom right before our very eyes, I can't help to think of how much sweeter a WS appearance/championship will be the more we get to know them -- just like we learn to love our own family more (as long as they don't suck) the more we spend time with them.

Having said that, win the whole damn thing next year!

This was a missed opportunity and nothing is guaranteed but I take a lot of satisfaction in having eliminated the Cards.

Yeah, they've got the overall playoff success (which obviously means more), but beating the Cards in the playoffs is the one thing we've got on them right now.

Well, that and none of our players have killed themselves drunk driving.
