As down as Cutler is I think with the right OC he can be what he was last year most years and even sneak in a top 10 season. And soon enough that's basically what his pay rate will be.

I think his body's shot from taking a billion hits and being diabetic and it's only downhill from here.

He's 31. And every indication that he's aggressively managing his blood sugar levels. Unless you can provide a source for that I'm taking it as wild speculation.

Of course it is speculation. We are speculating on why he looks so much worse this year and how he might do in the future.

Pat Mannelly just said that most of the Bears team found out about the Cutler benching the same way that we all did...twitter and the media.

Why didn't Trestman announce the change during his P.C? Unless the call to bench Cutler came straight from the top??

I don't know...there are so many unanswered questions about this team, particularly the last 2 weeks. I wish someone could get to the bottom of everything and write a book someday.

Trestman is in over his head and has a bad coaching staff and all those guys are looking to cover their asses and shift blame.

Not much more than that.

Seems like at this point the FO should be stepping in. I guess Emery is trying to distance himself from any decision as part of the blame shifting, but realistically that is worse than getting involved and trying to restore a little bit of control these last two weeks.

He absolutely should have already stepped in but the thing about Emery is he seems very much married to the structure of the organization and chain of command. The guy wants to run things like the military (his longest professional stint was with Navy) and I am guessing he views this as Trestman's decision/mistake to make. There is no 2014 season to save and stepping in at this point would go against the structure he implemented.

Yea it totally aligns with his organizational command, but treating Dec 29 feels a little arbitrary at this point.

They should really strongly consider a firing after Sunday. Don't give Trestman that homecoming trip haha.

He's looked worse at times this year, but not at all times. I think last game was clearly his worst and I believe that was a throw in the towel game in response to the coaching debacle. It's disappointing and partially justifies the complaints about his attitude, but not the norm.

While he hasn't looked as bad as Monday all year, I'm struggling to think of a really vintage "good Cutler" moment this year, like that epic Lions game a few years back. If his highs aren't gonna be his old highs he's gotta bring up the lows...

This team wasn't winning another game this season already, and replacing Jay with Claussen just further helps them attempt to improve their draft position. It also prevents Cutler from taking anymore abuse on the field. Detroit's game films from Monday must have had the defensive line salivating until the Lions kick off to Mariani on Sunday.

I think the thing that irritates me the most out of this is incompetent coaching is making the decision to replace Jay. The biggest failure on this team is the coaching, and yet they are the ones making even dumber coaching decisions.

This is pure speculation and probably not true, but I read someone suggest that Cutler is being benched for insubordination (among other things). Why? Remember midway through the 4th with the Bears down 24-8, still only down 2 scores the Bears started out a drive with back to back runs, confusing everyone. Did Trestman throw in the towel? The (unfounded) speculation is that Cutler, in an F you response to the Kromer situation actually checked in to running plays 2 times in a row.

I don't disagree but if we had a coach in place with the best interests of the org, shouldn't Fales be the guy?

Even when he has had some success this year, his arm has looked way worse.

Absolutely. I probably should have included that in my post. But, I do want losses the rest of the way and Clausen probably gives us the best chance of that.

From what I recall Fales was thought of as a guy that could have a 10 year career as a backup, not as a potential starter and definitely not as a rookie starter. I see no reason to player him.

To see if he is actually a backup, specifically for next year.

Throwing him into the fire against Detroit this week probably won't tell you anything.

Trestman is so bad at press conferences. Next time Emery should quiz his coaching candidates on how they'd handle them.

Lol

It has a greater than zero chance of telling you something. It could be inconclusive.

I guess Claussen isn't that old nor should he cost more than the min so he could also be your backup, but they just protected Fales, so they must see something in him...

On the list of things that make no sense this is pretty far down but it's still annoying to me, given the circumstances.

I think it has a greater than zero chance of telling you something, but there is no guarantee that what it tells you is not misinformation. He could get destroyed and look awful and it won't tell you he's incapable of being a backup next year.

He was taken of the practice squad to prevent another team from signing him themselves, reportedly. They didn't do it because they wanted him on the roster (unless they anticipated deactivating Cutler...)

It seems to me that the coaching staff has placed a microscope on their very own careers with this move. They could have just finished the season with Cutler and then tried to pawn off the blame of the season on a non caring QB (Cutler's world famous facial expressions and ineffective play).

With this move, they've attracted a lot more attention to this train wreck, which won't do a thing for their own careers if the same results appear with someone else at QB. That the offensive line has been a turnstyle of late and the defense not being able to stop anybody is not good for them. In other words, they won't be able to blame Cutler anymore.

And if the players disagree with management's decision, how hard are they gonna try in these last 2 games?

More baseless speculation from a friend is that a deal or at least the general terms is agreed to for Jay.

I don't buy it, but thought it was an interesting angle. I'd still go with Trestman trying to salvage his career.

Trestman knows he and his whole staff are gone in a few weeks. So he doesn't care about any attention this stunt will draw.

It's clearly not about winning games, and regardless of what is going on, that should be his stated (and actual) goal. Even if I hope they lose this games and move up the draft board. Those two shitty wins against shitty (more shitty than us) teams awhile back are going to sting on draft day.

The defense needs every possible body they can come up with. Carrying 3 QB's on Sunday would be stupid.

But, what do I care at this point?
