Been thinking about this, and given that Pace is apparently better at finding offensive talent (and that is where the strength of our roster presently lies), I'm not sure I hate the idea of bringing in Bowles to fix the defense with scheme (as well as obviously some input in personnel). At least, as long as the OC isn't a complete moron. Bowles has gotten a lot of credit for the AZ defense performing even when losing guys to injury and such.

Talking to @MikeKlis . He told us that Chris Ballard wanted to move on from Jay Cutler. How much did that impact #Bears decision for Pace?

*breathes sigh of relief*

Very interesting if true. That makes me happy.

I thought personnel decisions including Cutler's fate are completely up to the new GM. But George won't hire a guy who wants to get rid of Cutler from the onset? I didn't get the impression that the difference between Pace and Ballard was what they'd do with Cutler.

The news is that Ballard wanted to move on from Cutler. The question about how much that impacted things is just a radio guy doing his job by speculating to create discussion/controversy.

Wow. I like pace

If the Bears want to win next year, they have to keep

Yes.

and build around Cutler.

No. The OL could use some improving, but improving the defense and special teams are much more of a priority.

#Bears source: Team really liked Ballard, but wanted to break from the past, and Pace better articulated big picture, multi-year plan.

Like how Trestman had the most detailed plan out of all the coaching candidates? Week by week schedule for the next year or whatever.

That doesn't sound big picture at all.

I mean I have a multi-year plan, but I'm just a fan schmuck with nothing better to do.

That's exactly what I want. This is the perfect time to bring in a defensive coach like Bowles. The defense is going to have a bunch of young players next year. Briggs won't be around to control the defensive lockerroom. This is a very moldable group of defenders, and I think they need a strong leader. I think the offense can kind of police themselves. Obviously, you need a good OC but I think there is enough veteran leadership on that side of the ball with Cutler, Marshall, Garza, and guys like Forte, Bushrod, and Slauson lead by example. And Long is the "rah rah" guy.

Congrats guys. I'm not pretending to be too far in the know, but the Saints reporters I am buddies with all say this is a huge loss for the Saints FO. Loomis is the cap guy, Pace was the talent evaluator who too often got overruled by Payton. Supposedly he was the one of the most respected voices in the room at a young age, and most wished he had been given more control in personnel going forward. Marrone was sorely missed when he left too.

He was already promoted twice and rumors were he was going back to the Saints, with another increase in responsibility.

Teryl Austin made a strong impression on the 49ers today. Has interview w/ATL this weekend and Bills and Bears will meet with him as well...

Anyone wanting to get rid of a perfectly good nfl starter-caliber quarterback and take this team out into the [expletive] desolation of the vast qb wilderness is a meatball maniac who belongs far away from football.

Things are definitely looking up for Chicago sports franchises. Chicago could be the new Boston in a few years time.

For more ties to potential Bears coaches....

Adam Gase, the Denver OC who already interviewed for Bears HC job, is married to the daughter of Saints LB coach, Joe Vitt.
