So unless an NFC South team finishes 4-1 or better, the champion will have a losing record

and get a home playoff game!

As a Packer fan I'm more scared of playing a not very good New Orleans playoff team then some of the better ones. Probably because the only time they looked any good was against Green Bay.

Funny, but it could easily be a 11-5 Seahawks team at the 7-9 Saints in the WC round. I predict Mark Ingram will break off an 84 yard tackle breaking run to cement a Saints victory.

What's the worst possible record for the division winner?

5-11 assuming Atlanta or the Saints win one more and everyone else loses the rest of their games.

Right now on 2014 or hypothetically possible?

5-11 could win the AFC south (requires a couple TB wins).

Hypothetically (with no ties) I think it's 3-13 (where all four teams split all games and I have no idea what the tiebreaker would be).

Has to be kind of specific due to the divisional games left but everyone has to win to get that 5-11 team. TB beats Car. Car beats NO. TB beats NO. NO beats Atlanta. Atlanta beats Car. Then they all lose their out of division games.

Atlanta wins division at 5-11. Make Atl v Car a tie and NO wins with 5-11 record.

ETA you can swap Car-Atl, NO-Atl, NO-Car games and it's still a 5-11 Atlanta. So the TB are the key games since they have more "wins to give"

The Saints play Pittsburgh next week, and the Falcons get Arizona. Carolina is at Minnesota. Very decent chance all three teams lose those too.

While we continue on the NFC South, saw a tweet that the Buccaneers are 2 games out of first and 1 game behind for get the #1 pick in the draft.

1st place in the NFCS is 3 games behind last place in the AFCN

My fear is somehow the Falcons manage to win the Super Bowl after going 6-10 and bring Mike Smith back.

My wish is 5-11 and then 9-11 SB champ. Bonus points if any 11-5 teams in the AFC miss the playoffs completely.

(assuming you are a falcons fan?) If your biggest fear involves your team winning the Super Bowl, you are living a nice life.

So you're saying you wouldn't trade having to keep Mike Smith a few more years for a Super Bowl? I think every Bears fan here would trade off having to give Trestman a 10 year extension for a super bowl this year.

This team is a mess. I'd rather have a higher draft position and new coach to build for sustained success rather than 1 crappy Super Bowl coming off 2 terrible seasons.

Uhhh...but isn't the point to win the Super Bowl?

Yeah, who the hell are the Falcons? They've NEVER won the Super Bowl. I don't care how it happens, they should build a statue of the coach that eventually does it.

I'd rather have 1 Super Bowl followed by 10 years of awful and then another 1 awesome Super Bowl win than the 30 years of mediocrity the Bears have had since they last won.

Yeah seems odd, guess you gotta do it "the right way" or it doesn't count or something. This is the same mindset of the people who don't want to have to maybe over spend on pitchers when the time comes because we didn't get the most efficient deal or something

Again, I would prefer long-term sustained success over a fluky run that would ultimately hurt the team in the long run.

A guaranteed super bowl or the possibility that you might compete for a super bowl over the next 10 years?

This isn't like the Cubs deciding to strip down and rebuild for a chance at sustained success. In that scenario we knew we were now being run by a successful and innovative FO that represented a great improvement over the previous team builders. In your scenario you are talking about hiring a new coach with a chance to be at least decent while likely being run by the same person who put together the current team which isn't good enough to win a title.

Anyways this is an argument based on a hypothetical situation, but I just cant anyone how you wouldn't take a guaranteed title vs. a slightly more optimistic future.

5 playoffs in 7 seasons including a Super Bowl would seems like a pretty good example of long term success. The Eagles were about as successful as you could get over the longterm without ever winning a Super Bowl. I'm sure you'd rather be the Patriots but that isn't a realistic goal.
