They played better in the Vikings game and the actual play calling looked about as good as it had all year (low bar). I'd buy the implementing different looks thing based on the Vikings game, even if there were some clear execution and time management issues that limited the total point output.

The Pack game- I didnt seen anything that looked different play calling wise.

Well, they only scored 21.

If you want to talk overall outcomes, they won the game.

Have you gone back to measuring a pitcher's worth by the W column? This is a terrible argument even for you.

And he's saying that so is going by points rather than how the offense actually played and moved the ball.

I wasn't particularly pleased with how they moved the ball. Minnesota did nothing and the Bears could/should have put the game away but they did not. Maybe my opinion meter was skewed by how relatively poorly the offense has played all season, but the point of the matter is they haven't come close to doing their job this year.

They failed on two possessions that started at midfield and both the end of 2nd quarter and end of 4th quarter drives were throat stompable possessions that again disappointed.

If that 21 point effort was an anomaly I would shrug it off and say they got the job done but they've spent all year falling way short of what they are supposed to be doing. And this is from Trestman to Cutler, Forte, and on down to the lowest lineman.

I don't really disagree. Was just clarifying what I interpreted sulley's post to mean.

You can't put that much pressure on the offense, they have to have a margin for error. When you can't get your offense field position or stop the other team from kicking off after every possession, the offense can't be blamed at all for what happens.

That pressure to perform excuse does not hold in the Green Bay game. They crapped the bed.

sure. "Oh yeah, you guys have to score a touchdown every time we get the ball,, ok? And all of their players are pinning their ears back and coming for you, Jay. Good luck."

You will lose every time if your defense allows 55 points and forces 0 punts. But if the defense can't get a stop, the offense (for an offensive minded team) has to at least keep it competitive. The offense had 3 first downs, 3 punts, an INT and only 31 yards of total offense while the game was within 3 TDs. The Bears didn't stop the Packers the 1st time they played. After 2 drives, it was clear they weren't going to stop them that night either. At that point, it's on the offense to keep the ball and make sure the next time the Packers get the ball, the score is 14-7 and they've had 5+ minutes to hang out on the sidelines and hopefully cool off. And repeat as necessary. Worst case, you still lose, but they don't put up 55 if the offense does anything. And maybe the Bears offense makes them sweat a little in the 4th quarter if they put up the 28 they put up on average last year, and should be all means be putting up again with the same personnel with a year experience in the scheme.

I'm trying to remember the failed drives from midfield. Was that the second Cutler interception and bogus Cutler unsportsmanlike call?

Cutler's unsportsmanlike was later. This one was the Bennett PI call, then incomplete pass to Jeff on third down and punt inside opponents 40. Q3 was INT.

And yes, this team needs to be measured by points. Cutler is on pace to break all of last year's records for passing yards as a team. He's on pace for well over 30 TD passes. Forte is having another wonderful year. Yet, they are middle of the pack in scoring.

Anyone else a little underwhelmed by possible Trestman replacements? Looking around the lists posted online I think my favorite candidate is our third choice from 2013 (Bevell). I know a lot seem enamored by Bowles but I must be missing something...

Exactly, there's plenty of good things going on, but the failure to execute when necessary to put points on the board is the big issue. That's not nearly the same thing as using wins as a measure of anything.

Sure, because the Vikings are terrible and couldn't score.

Is a defense that allows a lot of yards but not many points good, or bad? Cuz I've seen a few of those over the years in Chicago.

The Bears offense played better, no doubt. But scoring 21 points against the Vikings doesn't make me sit up and take notice.

Newly-signed Marc Mariani will return kickoffs and punts on Sunday for the Bears, coach Marc Trestman said.

Maybe he has learned how to take a knee in the end zone.

Bears have 1 defensive TD so far this year. They had 6 last year. Gould has 10 FG attempts this year and made 8 so he's on pace for 13/16. He was 26 for 29 last year. Forte also hasn't broke out a "long" rushing TD (all rushing TDs this year have been inside 10 yards). It's not all of it, but there's your differences in scoring.

Unless it's just a case of the coach trying to deflect blame away from his players, our returners have done what Trestman/DeCamillis have wanted.

But with this being the case it's really odd to have two failed returners still on the roster.

I don't even know what you are trying to say. They are getting 20 fewer ypg than last year, but scoring a TD less. The lack of FG attempts thing means the offense isn't scoring enough too, so not sure what you are saying with that. Even with the defensive TDs, the Bears are on pace to score 5 fewer TDs on offense and 13 fewer FGs (based on your numbers above). That's 74 fewer points (4.625 per game), and that doesn't even take into account that you can't count on defensive scores or the fact that the offense should have improved in Year 2 rather than regressed.

Yeah, I thought that was evident.

I'd say their yardage totals against a decent defense with a pretty good secondary are more indicative of what this offense is capable. If Gould hits that FG and they kick the other one instead of running a QB sweep, they win by two TDs.

Going forward, they will score more points. But truly, this offense isn't designed to put up crazy amounts of points, it's designed to win time of possession by a large margin. Even with some bad luck at the goal line and a terrible interception by Cutler, they dominated the game and won rather easily.

But a lot of that is that the defense forced some punts.

Weird to think that starting tomorrow the Bears have 3 games in the next 12 days and then 1 in the next 16. In 12 days we could either be anywhere from 7-6 and right back in it, or 4-9 and hoping we finish our tank.

They were still underwhelming, given the expectations of the offense and that they were playing the [expletive] Vikings.
