Apparently there were 6,472 no shows at Soldier Field today.

Who buys a $200+ ticket and then doesn't show?

I know a couple of STH's that have had tickets for a long time and don't go to at least 1-2 games each year. I am not sure why.

At the very least, sell them on Stubhub or give them away at face value at lower. I know STH's that have 4 tickets and they've given them to me at face value ($70). Plenty of people still want to go to Bears games regardless of the record because tickets are so hard to get. But I guess if you're rich.

Lowest face value ticket this year is $81. I have four, I had to sell two last minute because my fair weather friend said he had to cancel because it's too cold and the Bears suck. At least he could have lied and said his kid was sick. I sold them on stub hub Saturday for $73. And the people who bought them ended up being pretty cool people.

Never invite him to a game again. That's a terrible friend and a terrible excuse.

Well you have a subordinate clause there and completed your thought with cutler having zero Super Bowls. So yes you did say that. You could have structured your sentence a bunch of different ways to have it not being dependent of cutler having no Super Bowls.

Like 5 posts later I said

Yeah, I wasn't saying Cutler should have any. Just that Eli shouldn't have the distinction.

This x725984039234. Also, how can you be a fair weather fan to a team like the Bears? I'm not sure if I ever met one as everyone around here is either a die hard Colts or Bears fan.

I don't get what that means.

It would seemingly be very easy to be a fair weather Bears fans.

I think he means, that how is he still a fan if he's just fairweather? The Bears have had more bad seasons than they've had good seasons. AKA where is the "fair" weather part that makes him a fan to begin with.

They haven't had many great seasons, but they've won more than most over the past decade. They've been in a Super Bowl, another conference championship and despite only one other playoff appearance, they were in playoff contention very late almost every season. They haven't finished more than 1 game under .500 since 2004.

That seems like an opportunity to have lots of fans get excited about things looking good and then abandoning them at their worst.

Yea. This isn't the 90s Bears... where my fandom really grew (ditto the Cubs!- what is wrong with me?)

Speaking of QB rating, I find it quite amusing that Cutler is on pace for a career-high in rating in 2014, not to mention he'll likely shatter personal records for Comp%, TDs, and possibly yards.

Of course ratings as a whole are on the rise. Currently 27 QBs with season ratings of 80+, that's pretty crazy compared to even 10 years ago. 90s are becoming pretty pedestrian.

I didn't say it made sense.

I can understand someone being a fair weather fan to Packers/Pats/Ravens/Colts/Steelers and then just jump ship right before they start sucking. Bears in the past 14 years don't have that kind of track record. Fair weather fans also aren't gonna go to the Jags/Raiders/Bucs/Lions/Bills either. Like you said, they been consistently close to .500 for a lot of those years. They're not bad enough for fair weather fans to abandon them because their worst was 7-9 (which isn't even that bad) in the past 10 year and not consistently good enough to attract them. 2005/2006 was the last time they won 9 or more games in back to back seasons then you have to go back to 94/95 for the next time they did that. One way I can see it is if you're not really a fan of NFL so you don't watch it much and you're from around Chicago or your family are Bears fan so you'll watch them when they're good and don't care when they're bad because you're not a fan of pro football anyway.

Maybe it's just where I'm at. I don't hear things like "Oh I'm a Bears fan this year because they're good! or Bears suck so I'm a ____ fan now". Then all the Colts fans around here didn't jump ship when they went 2-14 in 2011 or went with Peyton and became Broncos fans.

I don't think anybody admits to being a fair weather fan, or says the things you say you haven't heard said.

The fact is the Bears have been good at times over the past several years, which will draw in "casual" fans, but they have also disappointed quite a bit, which will drive those fans away.

Either way, this started when people talked about fans not showing up to games and I have no idea why somebody would be surprised about empty seats at Soldier Field. Fans hold onto season tickets because they want to be there when they are good, and some don't show up when things look bleak. Life happens.

I think of bandwagon fans for perennial champs as different from fairweather fans.

Fairweather fans are fans that support a specific team, but only do so when times are well. They are people with better [expletive] to do with their lives than sit through pathetic play.

If anybody is at all confused about what a fair weather or bandwagon fan is it's all the Blackhawks fans older than 10 and younger than 50.

The bears are such a huge deal in this city i don't think you can actually have a fair weather fan.

The Bulls were a great bandwagon case. 6 rings, contenders for several years. Then went to absolutely nothing. Most Bulls fans I know would not give the team the time of day between Pippen and Derrick Rose.

This may be one of the dumbest things you've ever said. There a tons of Hawks fans who are my age (38) that have loved them since the early to mid '90s with Chelios and Roenick etc.

I don't think that is really all that true. Fair weather fans take off when things aren't going well, but actual hardcore fans will abandon a perennial dumpster fire eventually. Still, plenty of Blackhawks fans actually stuck around during the worst of the worst.

Exactly. I will admit to being fairweather with all but the Bears. I haven't paid much attention to the Cubs the last few years. Didn't much when I was in college until 1998. I didn't pay much attention to the Bulls between Pippen and Rose as I posted previously. And in hockey, I actually took up rooting for another team (Avalanche) when the Blackhawks were a disaster after the Chelios/Roenick years.

I think with the longer seasons it's easier to tune out. You can miss a month of games, come back watch the team and not have missed much. Football is completely different, plus it's much harder to root for individual players/accomplishments in football than it is for those other sports.

Yeah. I'm not sure how that math works.

I'm 32. I discovered hockey when I was 8. Sure, I got the Final run my first year, but I sat through Eric Daze, Jocelyn Thibeault, the ABC line, Adrian Aucoin and whatever other late 90s/early 2000s Hawks I have to reference to prove my cred.

My favorite is the fan who LOVES their team or claim to be a huge fan, but really don't have a clue about the history of the team. A year ago on Thanksgiving, I was talking to a cousin of mine who is a "big Steelers fan". As we were talking about them, I asked him who is his favorite Steelers and he said James Harrison. We were talking about the recent and current Steelers then I started mentioning Greg Lloyd, Carnell Lake, Kirkland, Greene, and the Blitzburgh Steelers era and he just gave me a blank stare. He literally knew none of those guys except for Rod Woodson and Kevin Greene (because he remembered him as a Panthers). It was just mind boggling to me because, mind you, he's 33 so he should know those guys if he's a big fan of the Steelers. So I think he was a James Harrison fan first then became a Steelers fan so he didn't know anybody really before like '04. So every couple months, I'll send him a video of the Blitzburgh Steelers or Steel Curtain Steelers on facebook so he can brush up on the history of his team.
