I really hope we're not relying on Vogelbach for anything.

He's a very good 9th or 10th best positional prospect.

The Cubs had the best farm system then went on to have successful seasons in 2003, 2004 (mostly), 2006 and 2007. Some parts of that farm were turned into assets like Derek Lee. Secondary guys like Farnsworth became key contributors.

Yeah, it wasn't a total wash.

But I think we'd all be pretty disappointed if all we got out of all this hype was 3 playoff years, two of which were only tangentially connected to all these prospects.

I would be fine with this group only bringing 3 playoff runs so long as the farm system didn't come to all but a screeching halt (but not a complete one, so shut up) afterwards.

part of me hopes manfred finally puts a dh in both leagues

not only so a teams salary matches distribution fairly

but also so that vogelbach has a chance to play w the cubs

because he is a good hitter who will be worth a david ortiz / mo vaughn type spot

i kinda want it so we can put a good hitter there. and your last sentence is insane.

Amaro said he has received 4 "real" offers for Hamels, I hope one is ours.

I wouldn't give up what Amaro is likely "requiring" for Hamels.

He does really want to unload Lee though because of money still owed and has been interested in Castillo and Travis Wood. Any kind of deal that could be made there?

Are you asking if the Cubs could trade Travis Wood and Welington Castillo for Cliff Lee?

Not 2-for-1, no. That would be insane. But I was just thinking out loud if some kind of deal could be worked out with the Phillies.

Don't know whether or not to believe that. If he had legit offers he'd have to take one, right? Although it is Amaro so

No way Lee would any more than a straight salary dump at this point. He's certainly making more than he'd be paid on the open market.

unless Tom needs somebody to find rare truffles for the new fancy food options at the park

Can we go ahead and start calling Vogelbach Porkins as nature and Goerge Lucas intended?

http://grantland.com/features/brad-asumus-pitch-framing-dennis-eckersley/

As early as 2009, the Yankees analytics dept determined that "Jorge Posada could hit like Albert Pujols and Jose Molina could hit like Jose Molina, and Molina would still be better."

They didn't get full top-down buy-in, however, trading Molina after that season. But this article is just more evidence to the pile showing that by now all teams are aware that framing is a very huge deal. Thus, the "surprising" lack of market value of Castillo, and why it was such a priority to get Ross along with Montero.

Why is anyone responding to Kyle lmao. just go google a picture of him and laugh and realize that every aspect of his life is forgettable and that's why he's here, to escape that reality

That's why they respond. It's like throwing a bum a quarter.

Just a regular bum. Not Da Bum. He doesn't need your quarters with all that sweet oil patch money.

Here, I'll save people some trouble googling. This is the one I use on dating sites:

There's something in your teeth there, dude.

my recommendation to kyle is to join tinder and just swipe right on everybody. when you look like that and are a sports journalist, probably best to just cast as wide a net as possible.

I'm on Tinder. I don't swipe right on everybody, but I get a few hits even out here in the cornfields. It's like drafting in the 20th round. You try to convince yourself there's some thin upside play, try to overlook the flaws, nothing comes from it and you try again in a year.

Well this thread got surprisingly depressing in a hurry.

I wish we were more serious about Hamels too. But, you know, Theo's grand experiment and all.

If, by more serious, you mean "discuss Bryant, Russell, or Soler," which is reportedly where the line has been drawn, then I definitely don't wish we were more serious about Hamels.
