I can't believe anyone in management in this era - with advanced analytics having been a significant part of the baseball landscape for more than 10 years - would say that publicly, even if he really believes it.

Arizona GM Dave Stewart, on James Shields:

"I think James is a throwback guy by the way he goes about his business and the innings he pitches," Stewart said. "I think the fact that Tony (La Russa) is here and that we have more baseball people – he probably sees us as a true baseball team vs. some of the other teams out here that are geared more toward analytics and those type of things.

"Sometimes, there are concessions the player will make to be here. It's the case that he likes what we're doing with our organization from our end, all we can hope is that there will be concessions enough that he can be here."

lol, even Towers wouldn't have said that.

I'm sure Shields hated the success he had with the Rays and thought that they'd be much better off taking a different approach. I also think Shields will almost definitely take less money to play for Arizona, as he'd feel the challenge of pitching to pitiful backstops is too much to pass up.

My honest guess is Stewart is so idiotic that he'll not be capable of making trades with.

He's a Jim Hendry model. Find what he covets and work him over. Look at what Friedman did to the Padres and the Marlins. The Marlins got a fast guy who has on base anemia and the Padres got the husk of Matt Kemp. The Dodgers got better, younger, and less expensive.

As I've been saying about the negligibility of Castillo's trade value, "The truth will reveal itself to you in the fullness of time." Here's Arguello finally opening his heart to that truth - that his framing is so bad it wipes out the value of his positives:

"I am continuing to hear some confirmation that the sluggish market for Welington Castillo has more to do with teams looking for qualities that Castillo does not have at this point. I am getting to the point where I am not expecting much in return..."

I've always been kind of under the assumption that front offices were doing all kinds of cool statistical stuff behind the scenes that outsiders never thought of. Seeing them basically fall in love with pitch framing the same time everyone else does is kinda disappointing.

let's not get carried away with believing anything arguello is "hearing" even when it happens to make sense

The sluggish market for Castillo probably has a lot more to do with the Cubs asking price and leverage (they have three catchers and HAVE TO trade Castillo) than it does with a mythical innate personality trait.

Catching has always been a defense first position and the perception is that he's a mediocre defensive catcher.

hmm...does Castillo have an option remaining?

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Astros have agreed to acquire Evan Gattis from the Braves.

The deal is pending a physical, which is why Gattis is in Houston on Wednesday. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Braves will receive right-hander Mike Foltynewicz, third baseman Rio Ruiz, and right-hander Andrew Thurman in return, which is a nice haul for someone who was a poor fit for their roster. Gattis could split time between DH and left field in Houston and gets a nice boost in fantasy value with the trade. He's a no-doubt top-five option at the catcher position in mixed leagues.

The Braves' sale continues. Not a bad haul for them.

Does this make Dexter Fowler expendable in Houston? Wouldn't mind him.

He does not.

Although if the market for Castillo is slim now, they can wait to see if Wilson Ramos breaks his arm in ST or something. They can even keep him on the MLB roster until Bryant comes up if they really want to try and wait it out.

Update from source on #Cubs’ search for an OFer: Team not looking for another bench player. Would be regular in LF or CF - if it happens.

It appears as though the Cubs have acquired something called a "Lars Huijer" from Seattle.

We got him for Mike Kickham, who we picked up on waivers 12/23 and DFA'd a few days ago. Huijer is apparently a very large, 21 year old A-Ball pitcher, and was the Mariners #28 prospect last year. We essentially got a free fringe prospect.

Just saw that Rickey Weeks is still out there. Seemed to have a bit of a rebound last year after a disasterous 2012-2013. If the price is right, and I'm talking 1 year incentive based, any interest? It's not like we have 2B nailed down, and maybe he could log some time in the OF during ST.

@chrisrod13 LOL! I'm LAUGHING! 'Pitching is better', such a simpleton sabernerd answer! Correct answer: too much passive-aggressive hitting.

@RealChrisTweek The guy has only won 1 playoff series in 17 years as GM and he is the internet sabernerd hero! LOL!!!!!!!

Mooney's article from yesterday lines up with what Rosenthal tweeted. I'd prefer to add a LF myself and push Coghlan/Denorfia to the bench and give Alcantara CF, instead of having him play all over. Once KB comes up, that's what I envision Valbuena morphing into. Either way though, an upgrade at either spot would be nice heading into the season.

The funnier thing is that the Dave Stewart quotes seemed to be about pitching sabermetrics related to Shields, so I'm not quite sure why he's trying to pigeonhole sabermetrics as some "offense-only" thing to prove a nonexistent point.

Oh wait, he watched Moneyball and came to the conclusion that sabermetrics mean nothing but OBP, and only OBP, lol.
