On the other hand, what's Zobrist going to cost? One year of him.....I'd think Tampa would find value in Valbuena, would Vogelbach and one of Johnson/Edwards, with LV, be enough?

Am I in the Bleacher Nation comments?

I don't get it. The odd sentencing or do you think it's a horrible offer?(I don't read comments there)

No need to add Johnson/Edwards in there. Heck Voggy in it might be too much. I honestly don't see much difference between Valbuena/Zobrist except Zobrist can play OF, but Cubs have Valbuena for 2 more years and he's 4 years younger.

uh, really?

i think they insist on Baez / Russell as centerpiece; i'd obviously be willing to part with Baez & one of Almora/Johnson/Vogelbach

re Shields, i think i recall seeing his agent wants 5/110...i'll laugh when he inevitably 'settles' for 5/80

Seriously? Baez + (1 of those 3 guys) for 1 year of Ben Zobrist who will be 34 in May???? Are you kidding me? I like Zobrist as much as the next guy, but holy cow, what an overpay.

You do realize you're talking about a top 10 prospect (Baez) and then basically a top 100 prospect or fringy for Zobrist. We got that package for Shark and Hammel.

apparently you are unfamiliar with sneaky's position on javier baez.

Just because he doesn't like him/think he's a bust already/etc means you should just throw him in for 1 year of Zobrist.

pretty sure he has him as the centerpiece, not a throw in.

Wouldn't be surprised if Valbuena could be serviceable in a corner OF spot.\ if called on. Not an everyday guy, but a pinch.

Javy isn't getting dealt. We won't trade him as anything less than the headline piece of a major deal. And no team will do it for the bust factor. They'd take less ceiling and a higher floor. Starlin and Russell both have a better shot at being moved over the next 2 seasons than Javy does.(No, I don't see Russell being dealt and would have said the same on Starlin 2 hours ago)

Every single trade offer tops out at LV, Vogelbach and PJ/CJ

i really don't think intelligent people in baseball actually value Baez like a top-10 prospect; unfortunately we were the team that hired that idiot who was making Miggy comparisons with him...remember, other teams are the ones with scouting reports that are just huge red clouds around the strike zone and a huge 'LOL' writing overlaid

anyway, Zobrist would be the only non-Rizzo we could reasonably expect .350 OBP from and he projects as a nearly 3-win upgrade at 2B- i view that as a sizable improvement

You're kidding, right? I like Valbuena too....but Zobrist has been a much better player.

to expound on my previous post, if Theo fully believes the rhetoric he's talked up about "90 percent of the game revolves around controlling the strike zone", he would want to jump at the chance to get the type of player Ben Zobrist is (11.5% BB / 12.8% K last season) in return for a guy like Javy who just has no clue of the strike zone

Because one is 34 years old, on the decline both offensively and defensively and a rental and the other is 22 and has indisputably the finest bat speed in organized baseball?

Ok, I can see how if you're low on Baez, you might do that deal. But if you're low on Baez, how is he interchangeable in your mind with Russell?

yeah, that was the odd part to me, especially since he's super high on addison

he's not, i probably wouldn't trade Russell for Zobrist; i was more saying i would anticipate they'd ask for either player as a centerpiece to a swap

for the last 4 seasons, Zobrist is 7th in (hitter) fWAR in all of baseball

for the last 3 seasons: 7th

for the last 2 seasons: 7th

for the last 1 seasons: 13th

to whoever said he's on the decline, he hit above his career average this year for wRC+; he's consistently awesome and i'm not really sure you guys fully realize or appreciate this

Zobrist is basically Span to me. Both are real good and would fit well, but I'm not overly keen on giving up significant trade assets for a post-prime rental.

yup its one year... wait and sign when free agent don't give up prime talent for a rental

if even our bad prospects are all prime talent enough that we can't be bothered to move one for a consistent 5-win player, then we've quite seriously got a clear dynasty in the makings
Posted
Generally speaking, using your best trade assets for one year upgrades is a good way to avoid dynasties/constant contention

Specifically speaking, standing pat on an 83-win team is a good way to shorten your dynasty by a year.

what does letting one flounder and lose all value do?

also, why wouldn't we be able to keep Zobrist for longer than a year? is he known to be seeking Cano money the winter before his age 35 season?

Posted
The odds of keeping Zobrist being a good idea are very slim. If not, then sure, it's the same situation as Heyward.

For the same reason I don't value a $100 bill as an actual $100 bill if I think it may accidentally fall into a paper shredder in the future.
