Padres are now "team most likely" to acquire Kemp, per Nightengale and via MLBTR.

I wonder if we can get involved as a 3rd team where part of what we send out is Castillo to Dodgers and part of what we get is Grandal.

Check the splits. If you're getting Grandal, you'll want to keep Castillo.

Getting a RH backup catcher that can tag lefties a bit is an easier proposition than the inverse. Grandal's career against LHP(which is still only 200 PA) is more than fine too.

That said, the simpler solution is to send Valbuena for Grandal after Headley goes to SF or something like that. Friedman is probably not overly keen on accepting Castillo over Grandal in a trade.

Was thinking they could go sign Ross then, forgot to add that.

Anyone else think the White Sox are still going to kinda suck? Shark is perfectly fine and I like that rotation, but they have one good hitter...

You don't think Adam LaRoche or Adam Eaton are good hitters?

The divison is pretty good, but then again the Tigers seem to half ass it in the regular season every year. There is a chance for the Sox IMO. Plus they might still have some money to spend this year. Not for a premier guy, but someone that can help them.

Or Garcia or Gillaspie.

Garcia no, I've never been impressed with him and think he's a 1ish win player and gets hyped because idiots called him Mini-Miggy. Gillaspie is another 1 win guy. LaRoche is 35 coming off a win 1.6 win season so I guess he's ok. So those are 3 below average guys, and Eaton who's a league average player. So no, I am not impressed with them at all offensively.

Also that whole black hole at 2B is pretty glaring.

DH - LaRoche

C - Flowers

1B - Abreu

2B - Micah Johnson?

3B - Gillaspie

SS - Ramirez

LF - Garcia

CF - Eaton

RF - Viciedo?

One bat in that lineup is a threat and maybe LaRoche if you believe a 35 year old won't get worse at baseball.

How can u say they are 3 below average guys when u r saying they r at least 1 win players? That, by definition, is average to above average. Also if Shark/Sale pitch like the did last year and Rodon pitches like the high pick he was with their bullpen looking to be pretty solid all they might need is for Abreu to be awesome and then the rest of their offense to be around 1 win guys to be a playoff team.

Quintana too. Danks is the sucky one - his shoulder is trashed.

Well, if the 25 year olds aren't going to get any better...

Replacement does not mean average. 2 wins is more in line with league average production.

What 25 year olds? They have 1 player that played on their MLB roster for an extended period that is under 25.

EDIT: Position player under 25

I don't see the where Eaton projects to get better with the bat also he's entering his age 26 season. Eaton already had a .367 BABIP in 2014 so if you think he can improve on that I guess he can become a better hitter. Flowers is 29 so he is what he is most likely but I actually like him as a catcher with occasional. Garcia has the most upside, but I am not a believer in his ability to hit for power at all, but he could be a very solid MLBer. Gillaspie also enjoyed a well above average BABIP season in 2014 when you look at his minor league numbers and he's 27. Viciedo has 1800 PAs at the MLB level I believe the getting any better ship has sailed. I am not sure where you get all this projectability.

I don't see this team scoring enough runs to truly compete. The top 3 in the rotation is sick. They have 2 relievers that aren't god awful, but that can be patched. You can see them trying to build in the mold of the Royals, but I don't know if that kind of winning is a sustainable strategy and Duke and Robertson aren't Herrera, Davis and Holland.

Rodon? Relying on a 2014 pick to pitch meaningful innings as a Major League starter seems like a sound strategy, and I like Rodon as a prospect, but that dude's arm. I love Sale/Shark/Quintana but there is that whole offensive part of the game that also matters. They signed Zach Duke and Robertson, so their bullpen is solid all of a sudden? I don't think they're done adding pieces but this team, as it stands, is far from a lock to compete in that division.

The Sox remind me a bit of some of the Hendry era teams. You can absolutely see a path to them competing, they have some stars and a few solid role players and a few more that could definitely step into role playerdom(Garcia, Rodon, Davidson, maybe Flowers?). The problem is that's not all that likely and they have very little margin for error since 1) Most of their player value is in pitchers and seriously, screw pitchers and 2) they have zero internal reinforcements coming to trade for help or otherwise boost the MLB team. It's why I'm especially confused that they made the moves they've made. They haven't exactly mortgaged the future, but I don't get guys like LaRoche who are very much 2015 moves with diminishing returns when they stand so little chance of making that leap.

FWIW, from Passan. More the latter part of the quote, I'd imagine they would move quickly on a trade now if they already started exploring.

Sources: Now that Miguel Montero is dealt, the next move for Chicago is to trade Welington Castillo. Had explored deals during Martin chase.
