There's talk the Reds may decide to blow it up this offseason.

One less possibly good team would be nice.

The Central in general doesn't look as scary long-term as it did a year ago.

lol remember all your pants wetting about the cardinals prospects who are now all bad, dead or injured

Who is he suppose to be signing with?

Source: 6 teams interested in Jonny Gomes. #Cubs believed to be among them, but Gomes still "early in the process"

I cannot fathom a reason to have Jonny Gomes, or even the best version of a Jonny Gomes-like player, on the roster, unless there is a 0% chance of Bryant playing the OF in 2015.

standard 4th/5th OF who "mashes" lefties and looks gritty and stuff?

Only rumor I've seen is that the Phillies are willing to pay a ton.

Law said in his chat today he thinks 1 of Miller/Wacha/Martinez for Heyward would be "more than enough." So along those lines does that mean something like Hendricks + 1 of Almora/CJ/Pierce would be enough/comparable? I know what's fair on an online chat and what the market/Braves dictate are two different things.

A RH corner OF seems incredibly redundant with Soler and probably Bryant playing hundreds of games at those spots, plus Ruggiano already in tow as a lefty masher reserve who can actually play a bit of defense. I can see a RH CF because 1) the incumbent there is (primarily) LH 2) Ruggiano isn't much of a CF and 3) the incumbent has the most tenuous grasp on the position, but for a corner OF I don't get it. I guess there's a decent chance that if Bryant is an OF then you could carry 6 OF including him and Alcantara, but I'm not seeing much benefit to the Gomes archetype.

also of note is the fact that jonny gomes will be 34 in a week and sucks

and every media member following the Cubs said they would be going after gritty grindy veterans to teach the kids how to play.

It's fun to be linked to every FA and trade target. And the reasons why are undeniably good.

I would love to have Jason Heyward, like any team would. But he's expressed wanting to explore FA next year and you can always pay him then, he'll only be 26. We already have Soler and very easily Bryant there soon. I wouldn't make a move for a position player unless it's CF or C. Or Stanton.

ETA: I'm well aware that I did not answer your question at all.

If I believed that Heyward could work in CF(with his RF defense and range I think it would work for at least a few years given his age) and had any type of indication that he would be agreeable to sign with the Cubs, I would be knocking down John Hart's door. The more I've thought about it, he's a better fit than Stanton.

If he can't reverse the trend of his declining slugging % from being pitched outside consistently then how valuable is his mega-contract when someone who is 6'5" 250ish loses his speed? I'd still rather take Stanton and the extra cost with his profile.

If there's something structural that's been found out about him that's limited his power that's certainly something to keep in mind, but at the same time, we know he's physically capable of more power, he's only 25 on Opening Day, and as a guy who's a career Brave there's probably more opportunity for coaching to help on that front. Also, Heyward's 2014 line in CF with say, +5 defense is still a 4 win player. Still well worth a very big contract given his age and potential for more if that's at all near his baseline of play.

Yeah, I'd love to find a way to get Heyward.

Guys, what would it take to acquire Heyward?

Baez+Edwards and then a contract extension right around 7/150 would be my guess. That would make him a FA at 33 to sign one last multi year deal. Alcantara moves back to 2B and Valbuena holds 3B until Russell is ready.
