plus that contract was worth every penny dammit

Meh, it was probably a slight overpay even if you factor in the extra playoff revenue. But depending on what Corey Black does for us that could still change.

It definitely wasn't anything like the sort of albatross people made it out to be, though. I wasn't a fan of the signing, but it turned out about as well as could reasonably be expected. Hell, I can't think of more than a couple mega-deals that have worked out any better.

Probably depends on how far back we're going on this definition of mega-deal. Derek Jeter signed a 10 year, 189m deal in 2001 that seemed high at the time, but worked out pretty well. I guess the difference there is that wasn't a free-agent signing.

Zack Greinke contract looks ok. But other than that, most big-time FA deals don't pan out as hoped.

@ESPNChiCubs Arrieta says he's talked to some free agents about the Cubs but he won't reveal names.

better be someone good jerk

My first instinct is Markakis, but I think he re-signs with Baltimore and I don't really think the Cubs target him anyway.

Beltran's Mets deal was panned at the time but turned out to be fine, as was Beltre's with Seattle (and Texas).

Sign Scherzer and Lester holy [expletive] win win win.

It was? I seem to recall loving him at that price.

There were a lot of people who thought it was too much. There are even people who still think it wasn't a good deal after the fact, shockingly.

I think it was the number of years that initially surprised people

Am I the only one that would like to see us pass on Lester and Shields (would be fine with Scherzer, but doubt we spend the cash for him), get guys like McCarthy and Brett Anderson/Josh Johnson, and make a big push for Price and Maeda next year, instead? (Assuming Maeda isn't posted this offseason)

You and a lot of other people who don't care about winning in 2015 for some reason.

I don't get the "pass on Lester now but sign Price in a year" sentiment that some people have expressed.

Because Price is better than Lester and I'm too jaded to think that our team will be good enough to win the Central as young as we are going to be next year? I'm also operating under the assumption that Theo has some kind of cap. If we can sign Scherzer and Lester and Shields and Price then sure, let's get them all. If I have to chose I'll take Price.

Trying is scary because it carries with it the possibility of failure. Basking in the glow of perpetual but vaguely defined progress is more fun.

I won't pretend that isn't partly true.

Eh. They're pretty similar and Lester is like a year and a half older so the difference in age isn't much.

Combine that with the opportunity cost in harming your 2015 chances to compete, and it's no brainer what is a better outcome, IMO.

That's without even getting into salary. Maybe Price makes a lot more, too.

The short answer is no, you probably aren't the only one.

The longer answer is you should be the only one because passing on guys today in hopes of getting others guys a year from now is a great way to not get any guys.

...I'm not advocating getting no one.

Sure, it always depends on what kind of deal you sign each player at. I wouldn't mind paying 2-4 mil a year more for Price than Lester. I would just as nearly like signing Scherzer right now, but I don't allow myself that much hope. I do think we wind up with Lester.

no one of consequence

Maeda isn't even likely to be as good as Hammel, McCarthy or other mid rotation types out there right now. There's no reason at all to pass on elite talent for a guy like him.

And there's no reason at this point to pass on Lester for Price or any other option like that either. We're talented enough to win now with a few added pieces. We have the money and we now have the assets as well to amp things up a ton.

The longer answer is you should be the only one because every season is sacred because it represents the chance to win the World Series.
