Glad we all agree Baez is a bust.

I don't agree.

Rosenthal notes that if MLB can prove the Cubs tampered, the Rays could demand a promising young player in compensation, maybe even a player as talented as Javier Baez or Addison Russell.

There is probably nothing to the tampering allegations, but statements like this are still scary as hell.

With as strategic as Thoyer are...I'm sure they considered the tampering situation and therefore made sure this could be ruled out.

Regarding giving up a top prospect - that's total [expletive], no way they'd be forced to do this. Maddon was making $2M with a chance to make $5M - clearly he's underpaid

They can demand anything they damn well want. If they're lucky, they'll get Jeff Antigua and Tony Zych.

Gammons on the Maddon hire: http://www.gammonsdaily.com/peter-gammons-cubs-get-their-man-in-maddon/

Only negative was this part:

The Cubs may or may not go heavy into free agency this winter; most likely they’ll gauge their chances with Russell Martin, and wait for the pitching that will be hitting the market next November.

I feel like this is the worst part of Gammons. He's great at baseball storytelling, but not so good at predicting trades or free agent outcomes.

Also...

By 2016, Anthony Rizzo and Starling Castro will each be 26

It would be demonstrably stupid for the Cubs to not go after a front line starter.

Yeah, you can't wait and see who's there next year. You know who's available now, have money and a pretty good shot to get at least Lester for no lost draft pick. Even if you don't have enough to compete this year you get as many pieces in place as you can for and BEFORE 2016.

They do have enough to be very good in 2015 with some added pitching which is a big reason why it would be so idiotic for them to pass on the available pitching.

Agreed:

1) We have a lot of $$$ to spend that's going to go to waste otherwise

2) We have a protected 1st round draft pick

3) We can compete for the playoffs with a few of the right FA signings, and then it just depends on what team is hot at the right time.

Assuming the bidding doesn't go completely crazy it makes sense to spend now. We should have enough revenue coming online over the next few years to be able to continue to make upgrades to the team and basically do whatever needs to be done. You're wasting cheap years of Rizzo/Castro/Bryant/Soler, etc if you don't spend now.

Theo Epstein wouldn’t speak to Maddon until he had written proof of the opt-out and permission from the Commissioner’s office, and Nero considers it “a bit insulting” that the Rays would suspect tampering took place.

And that should end the tampering discussion.

Tampering won't get anywhere, but the people accused denying it won't end the discussion.

Um...that's more than a simple denial. If they got permission from the commish's office, it will, then Tampa has no case.

What if Tampa alleges that there was contact before that official contact?

Right back where we started: they say/we say.

Uh, he's not wrong.

Not that it matters.

Well, yeah, it's "we said/they said", but The Cubs FO put forth their version of events, Maddon's agent corroborated that account, and we've heard nothing from MLB that contradicts any of it.

All that's come from/about the other side is the suggestion that there's vague suspicion of tampering (unless I've missed something, TB hasn't leveled any detailed allegations).

That, combined with the account of the TB front office themselves bringing attention to the opt out clause, and Nero's statement about TB making only flimsy offers (what I infer from that is that the Rays weren't really all that hot to keep him around), it's hard to imagine anything at all will come of this.
