so they specifically discuss Maddon but don't announce his hiring?

I thought that was strange as well. If for any reason it doesn't happen, they look eternally stupid.

yeah really weird. you have to think if they are really still negotiating, announcing Ricky's firing really kills their leverage.

Rick must of got pissy. I don't blame him, it's tough to take.

What I really don't understand with the Rays supposed tampering claim, isn't it part of the whole story that the Rays front office guy had to tell Maddon about the opt out clause? How are the Cubs talking to him about something before he finds out it exists?

Come on. You really think they're firing Renteria if they don't have Maddon locked down? That's ridiculous.

I live just north of Tampa it's funny how pissy Rays fans are being over this. Most people I talk to bring up tampering right away. I think they are going to be pretty disappointed if they think Cubs will be found guilty. I really want to get a Cubs Maddon Jersy this weekend just to poke the angry bears.

Not at all, I'm just surprised they used his name prior to announcing his hiring.

Maddon didn't learn of the opt-out and then immediately decided to leave. He was told he had the clause and was given a few weeks to decide. The Rays think the Cubs spoke with him during that time before he officially opted out.

In a very short period they lost Price, Friedman, and Maddon. Not to mention their park is a [expletive] hole. Gotta be a tough time to be a Rays fan after the last few years success.

Yup that stadium is terrible, the only time I've been there was when the cubs played there a few years ago haven't been back. It's like a giant Highschool gymnasium, a terrible place to watch baseball. They could draw fans but not in that dump.

if their fans can't be bothered to go watch a good team because the stadium is boring, they don't deserve a good team or a good stadium

Yup. Wrigley is a gigantic [expletive] hole, yet it's packed when these idiots are even remotely competitive.

Sternberg still owns the Rays right? That's a good ownership group. I think they'll be ok from a talent standpoint in time. I'd be more concerned about that [expletive] stadium and low attendance.

I'm one of the few people on earth that's actually been to a Rays game. It really is that bad. It's depressing.

Agreed. If a team is good then their fans should show. Shea Stadium was a repulsive monstrosity that no human should have had to endure (old Yankee Stadium wasn't much better), but when those teams won they drew huge.

Oakland generally has big and good playoff crowds as well (and the small crowds that do show up in the regular season are awesome), and they play in a dumpy football stadium. A bad stadium is no excuse.

No I don't think that, that's why I think its weird that the moves (firing Ricky, hiring Maddon) weren't announced at the same time.

As bad as Tropicana is, the real issue is the accessibility.

Going from memory, but Keri suggests in his Rays book that location of the stadium is the biggest problem. Not 'there's no bars/restaurants' location, but 'most of the metro area can't reasonably make a 7:00 start after work' location
