Well, [expletive], that's the last time I defend Derwood.

When was the first time?

*Sigh*

That's part of the joke.

And I admitted from the start that I was hot taking this....why would I go only half way with it?

Basic human decency?

You first

Why do people keep pretending the Padres are supposed to be a crappy team on here?

Because they've had two winning seasons in the past 8 years and play in a park no one can hit in?

The Cubs have been dog [expletive] the past 3-4 seasons... are they a crappy team this year?

The Padres underwent one of the biggest transformations this offseason. You could argue they have a better lineup than the Dodgers at this point.

If they get Shields, they'll probably be better than the Cubs.

I believe some of the projections metrics already have them at a game or so over the Cubs. I know either ZIPS or PECOTA did.

It's like people have Kyle on ignore!

ZiPS has the Padres as significantly worse than the Cubs, about 5 games or so.

ffs derwood. Not saying they're better than the Cubs. Just saying that calling the Padres crappy is a really silly stance to have at this point.

Fair enough.

They're def gonna be my second most viewed team on MLB.tv this year. I can't wait to see Kemp and Myers out there.

Source: #Padres' most recent offer to James Shields was four years and between $72 million and $80 million.

The longer this drags, the worse it looks for the Pads is my guess.

I keep starting to think that but I don't want to get my hopes up.

Replacing the dumpster fire of fifth starter candidates with Shields would be incomprehensibly awesome.

I know TT is going to dislike a lot about that sentence.

Yeah, this almost certainly started as a tactic to simply get more money out of San Diego, but some of the competitors may have gotten a little more serious than the Padres anticipated. It's hard to say, but if Shields to SD was such a certainty, it seems like it should have happened by now.

I think it's pretty straightforward. Shields is OK with playing in SD - he has a home there and they've made real improvements. But there are places he'd rather play, and he's waiting to see if any of them match what the Pads have offered.

If SD was Shields' first choice I agree, he'd have signed. Why might they not be? Maybe after playing most of his career for small-market teams, Shields knows this is his last chance to go to an organization that's going to financially commit to winning every year. Shields may think the Pads, despite a one-winter aberration, have a poor track record in this regard. As to whether he feels the Cubs are trustworthy in that regard, who knows.

FWIW

@jonmorosi To clarify: My sources have not said James Shields has *accepted* offer of 4 years between $72M and $80M. But that is #Padres offer.

Thought that was pretty clear to begin with.

Curious that he hasn't accepted it yet. Still kinda think he's trying to drive their price up one last time.
