Week 5: Bears (2-2) @ Panthers (2-2) Noon Fox/780

Posted
can we stay within a game of .500 through the @GB game?

Maybe. I really don't know what to expect from this team. 3 of those 4 games are winnable but with this team I don't think any game would be considered an easy win. Would need to go 2-2 in those 4 games.

If we do that, I would be ecstatic because I could see the Bears going 5-2 in the last 7 games, giving us an outside shot at a playoff spot.

Sounds like the Bears are going to fall just short of the playoffs and everyone will keep their jobs to me. Football Hell.

The previous coaches all lost their jobs after a 10 win season. This team wont win 10 games. Somebody explain to me why we needed to make changes two years ago but not now.

Team needed to be reloaded due to aging and Lovie wasn't the right one to do it.

The Bears current window depends on Cutler, Marshall and Forte aging gracefully and progress from recently drafted and FA players. If the offense is still a top 10 unit at year's end, I think you keep Trestman in place and have year 3 be playoffs-or-bust. It could be ugly after that if more young impact players don't start showing up on both sides of the ball. Right now you have Jeffery, Long and Fuller.

If your offense only works when all your receivers are 100% healthy than you dont have a good offense. Marshall practiced all week and was declared to be healthy by this coaching staff. Trestman is the head coach. If Marshall is so obviously not healthy to those watching tv either (i) the tv watchers are wrong and he is healthy or (ii) trestman is a clown for continuing to play an ineffective and injured player.

i have no problem criticizing them for continuing to play marshall.

i've been saying he should take at least a week off since the 9ers game.

I'm surprised his brittle old man bones didn't disintegrate upon impact

Martellus Bennett said he looked up at the Jumbotron to see who to block on the long Forte screen. Couldn’t turn around in time, he said.

Is Jared Allen's cap hit $13mln next year and there is nothing we can do about it? Between him and houston i think we have $20mln against the cap on DEs who dont have any impact on the game.

I don't know how Allen's contract is because I believe 12 mil of that is due to a roster bonus, but it's still guaranteed though.

Until further notice the biggest choker in the NFL title has been transferred from the Manning brothers to Cutler.

Ha, they have three titles and Eli played like a stud when it counted in the playoffs

Eli [expletive] sucks, shut the [expletive] up

It's guaranteed for next year. They won't cut either till after next year.

After this last FA season, I wonder if they're headed towards a model like the Colts had as far as spending as little on FA defense and drafting.

Mike McCoy might be a top 5 coach in the NFL right now in San Diego. And the Bears chose Trestman.

Trestman passed on the AP Coach of the Year in Arians too. There was a far better one winning Grey Cups in Canada he thought.

How do people seeing the next 3-5 years for the Bears going? I'm kind of concerned we are going to bottom out for a few years if we don't do anything this year. This is the NFL so unless you are completely devoid of impact talent and/or have terrible QBs you are going to have a shot to be decent or better each year but with the majority of our impact talent being over 30, it might be difficult to contend for the playoffs.

But those guys aren't quarterback whisperers.

Emery got fooled. Jay is what he is. He's not going to improve much or change significantly despite Trestman's best efforts and Jay having more babies and getting more mature and seeing leadership gurus in New York City. You can improve the offense by putting better people around him, but I don't see Jay being a Pro-Bowler again, making better decisions, or living up to his ability. Jay could get you into the playoffs, but I have a hard time believing he will be the QB who will win you four straight against playoff caliber teams.

Emery could have chosen coordinators who a lot of people wanted. Instead he went with a guy that no one in the NFL had wanted as a head coach for years in Trestman. Yes Trestman worked wonders with the offense last year. But his glaring weaknesses are his coordinator hires. Hires that should be gone next year.

In 3-5 years the GM, whoever that is, could draft well and the Bears could get a number of good FAs. How many times did the media say that after 2006 the Bears window was pretty much shut? Well it wasn't. Hard to predict what will happen, but I don't think it's necessarily bleak.

Well Phillip Rivers might be the MVP front-runner and Arians is leading back-ups to wins

Jay threw one bad pass today - the overthrow to Holmes.

His first half interception was a good decision and a decent throw that drew blatant PI that was not called. At the point of catching the ball, it was 1-1 coverage of Marshall by a linebacker.

It's hard to blame Jay for the boneheaded special teams play, the Forte fumble, the missed chip shot field goal or the inability of the defense to stop a hobbled offense.

People in these threads like to go to an uncommon level of granularity to defend cutler. It's not his fault they lost today. He was 28-36 and 300 yards. But seriously he threw Ito triple coverage and it was picked off. It was probably PI but you aren't gonna get the whistle every time. Going over the middle into triple coverage was a bad decision. He also bounced one off a DB in the final drive. Cutler is not taking any next step as a bear. He's a decent qb.

The problem is that our qb went 28-36 and forte had a great game and the offense had a number of short fields and they only scored 24. I blame Trestman's total inability to call the offense with a lead. I blame trestman that we are the worst special teams I've ever seen. All things considered I feel like the defense played pretty well today.

You think the offense is less to blame than the defense? The former completely vanished in the second half.

I was responding more to the posts above mine that were calling out Jay for "being what he is" and so forth.

The offense definitely stalled in the second half. The success they had running in the first half went away, the short passing game got shut down and Cutler got sacked any time he tried to hold the ball long enough to go deeper. Add in two turnovers and a few penalties and there you go.

It wasn't triple coverage.

Until further notice implies current, present day. Just like Adrian Peterson is not called the best RB or the MVP currently despite being both at some point in his career but no continue with the defense of something that was never argued.

You seemed to be talking about years before 2013. You said Eli was the choker in 2013, but before that it was Peyton. Not a stretch to think you weren't talking about their careers. Then let's argue that these losses aren't on Trestman. Who hired the defensive and special teams coordinators? That would be Trestman and he certainly bears his fair share of the blame. Trestman is a good OC, but he's a below average head coach. Edited by Wilson A2000
