He probably would have been thrown out, yeah, but given that they hadn't been able to do anything against Bumgarner all series, why not make them execute the throw home? The odds of Gordon scoring couldn't have been much worse than facing Bumgarner.

 

ETA: Between the relay throw home and the blocking the plate rule, I think the odds were better sending him.
