Sounds more like some guys spec turned into a rumor. But as a change of scenery for two guys with minimal value and salaries have to be paid regardless, sure, why not?

Doesn't sound like that at all. It's pretty explicit.

The Braves and Cubs engaged in trade discussions in July, a high-ranking official with direct knowledge of the talks, about a deal what would send Upton to the Cubs and Jackson to the Braves.

Essentially, it was just a straight swap of dead weight contracts for underperforming players.

I'd rather have him than Ethier or Crawford. I can't think of anyone else that makes sense in a bad contract swap.

I think playing with his much better brother doesnt help him. Change of scenery could be worth a shot

What was his excuse in TB?

why would he have needed one?

You'd be stuck with him for 3 years instead of 2. So my first reaction is, just suffer through what we have and be done with it. However you could more easily hide Upton as a 5th OF than Jackson as a reliever. Cause heaven forbid, what if we are competing next year? You could only allow Jackson to pitch in blowouts.

All of this makes me smile as I think back to some of the guys who were upset with the rebuild and wanted us to sign guys like Upton, and just smile.

I pondered the thought of U. Jimenez for Jackson, that drop in velo is too concerning as well as the additional year. The safest bet would be to cut the losses and minimize his role as a future long reliever/6th starter.

Do any of 1 of Jackson's pitches rank as plus by pitchf/x that he could maybe be okay out of the bullpen? Edited by Cubswin11

Because he was mediocre at best his last 4 years.

He put up 3.9 and 3.1 fWAR with TB in 2011 and 2012. And 3.8 with them in 2010.

Yeah, no.

See above.

Pretty sure his slider has been very good this year. It's his 4 seamer that gets rocked. This is going by whiff% though. I think pitch f/x hates all of his pitches.

And bWAR of 1.1, 1.4, 3.0, 2.8 - for 2009 to 2012. I'll ad in the 2.1 fWAR for 2009 that you left off.

For the vast majority of pitchers, I'll look at fWAR when projecting future performance (and evaluating past performance).

But there's a handful of pitchers for whom it likely overstates their value. Javier Vazquez was one. Ricky Nolasco is one. Edwin Jackson appears to be another.

I'm not sure what it is about those guys, but they almost always seemed incapable of outperforming their fielding independent pitching numbers.

That was Jackson's reputation prior to joining the Cubs, but it wasn't really all that true in practice. It happened one year and he's always been a guy whose results came and went with his command, so it's a label that stuck even though his FIP and ERA tracked pretty closely for his career.

As a Cub that reputation has certainly been well earned, and it's still largely the same cause(command issues leading to hard contact) just getting worse.
