We have Arrieta, Wood, Wada, Hendricks, Turner, Straily, Doubront, and maybe Vizcaino, though I wouldn't bet on him as rotation options under team control. We have the resources to acquire a front end starter in the offseason, and I'm sure they'll be on the lookout for a Maholm/Feldman/Hamel type. Jackson's kind of looking like the odd man out. At $11MM per year the next two seasons, we'd be lucky to eat that entire salary and end up with a guy who might sneak into our top 15-20. As long as we'd be stuck with the contract regardless, why not see how he'd do in the pen? Now might be a good time to start the experiment.

Edwin to the unemployment line is something that should happen.

I would say it is worth a try to see if he can be a reliever. He throws 96 mph as a starter so maybe he could add a few mph to that in relief and be pretty good. Not sure how much he would embrace the change, however, and if he isn't committed to doing it most likely it wouldn't be successful.

I feel like the biggest reason he was signed was to eat innings during this interim period when they new they were going to be hard up for pitchers. Until he is actually pushed out by better guys who can be counted on to eat as many innings they might as well just let him keep going out there. Just not every other day.

He's eaten the innings this year (somewhat), and still can in relief. I'd throw him in long relief and use him if you want to limit the innings thrown by Hendricks, Turner, Arrieta or Wada....giving Jackson a random start here and there or throw him in after a 4 IP, 65-pitch outing by the starter. If he's around next spring, give him another shot at the rotation. But at this point, it probably makes just as much sense to pay him $22Mil the next 2 years to pitch somewhere else as it does to pay him that much to pitch for the Cubs in relief.

@thekapman Jed Hoyer now on @KapandHaugh on 87.7 FM @gamechicago talking Edwin Jackson etc. “We’ll do some different things w/our rotation in Sept."

Irrespective of whether you try and salvage Jackson as a starter in 2015, it makes no sense to burn starts on him now when you have three guys the organization really needs to get a look at as SP.

who do they "need" to get starts that is not getting them?

Straily, Turner, and Doubront are all 2015 rotation options that are not getting starts right now.

We've got winter leagues and spring training to get looks at Straily, Doubront, and Turner. While it'd be nice to see them get a few starts now, it's not like we've got enough time to declare any of them as definites for next year. Same goes for Hendricks and Wada. I'd set the over/under at 1.5 on how many of that group open up in our 5 man rotation next April.

2 of them are getting starts in the minors. Turner is 23 and has plenty of time to get starts.

1.5 for Hendricks, Turner, Straily, Wada, and Doubront? I take over. I think Hendricks and Turner would both be penciled in right now with the other 3 fighting for the last spot with a few other guys.

I think the point is that it's more useful to get a look at these guys in the majors than it is to keep trotting Ed Jxn out there.

Is it? Or is that what you want to see? I said in this thread that I'd put Jackson in the pen. But it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. 2 of the 3 that would likely take Jackson's place are getting starters innings. Turner has plenty of ML starts to evaluate, hence the claim.

I thought the point was they hoped to turn some of these guys around after giving the Cubs pitching experts time to work with them. I do not see how it is vital to get them in the major league rotation today.

In Turner's case, I'd like to see him start the rest of the year so the staff has a better opportunity to evaluate him and work with him. I have to think it's better for both him and the staff to work on things on a regular schedule as opposed to getting 2 innings a week out of the pen. If Jackson is the one that should be kicked out of the rotation, so be it. I don't care too much about Doubront and Strailey, because I don't see either one as particularly important for the future.

I think Bosio and the rest know the best way to handle it. In some cases it is better to get the mechanics worked out in side sessions instead of throwing guys into games where they may fall back to bad habits.

Yes to both.

Jackson might rebuild some value in the pen with his big fastball. The only reason to keep trotting Jackson to the hill every fifth day is because you are tanking for a good draft pick in June. :beg:
