I'm more impressed with the call, honestly.

It's pretty crazy how much movement and control can make up for a lack of velocity. He looks really good. He's definitely a guy who could easily get lit up really bad if he doesn't have his control on a particular night.

The offspeed stuff is nice too.

I'm going to have to discontinue my "minor-league overexuberance discount" on expectations. Alcantara and Hendricks both look exactly as advertised.

Both really smooth transitions. Alcantara is making more contact and swinging at less pitches than he did in the minors -- just slightly, but still. That's inexplicable to me. I was very concerned about that with him. Hendricks, I always had faith in -- velocity be damned. The numbers just screamed out to me that he could get it done, considering he was amazing at every stop, including the high minors. But, it's good to see him be exactly as advertised.

This inning is showing what happens when he loses command even a little bit, though.

lol at all the critics and morons out there saying the Cubs are going nowhere in the next couple years because we have NO pitching.

I've been leading the "our short-term pitching outlook sucks" parade for three years now. It's up to the point now where I like it a little bit.

I mean, it's still pitching, so six guys could have shoulders blow up simultaneously the first day of spring training. And I don't overwhelmingly love it. But I like it.

Arrieta, Hendricks, Wood, Turner, Straily, Doubront, Wada?, Jackson is acceptable starting pitching depth for next year. It could be improved considerably by a TOR addition or two, but who couldn't?

For the bullpen under control next year, we have Ramirez, Rondon, Grimm, Wright, Strop, Grimm, Schlitter, Rosscup, Rivero and Vizcaino. Plus any of the guys who don't make the rotation.

And I think it's conceivable that, if we were in competitive games in August/September, that Pierce Johnson or CJ Edwards could contribute next year.

Javy is making me sad.

Why? I thought he had a solid night at the plate.

Not today specifically, I could just use another Super-Javy night soon to get me jazzed. Too bad that first hit didn't go 5 feet farther.
