To sidetrack from the gif thread...who are the leading candidates to go the AFL? Almora, McKinney, Schwarber, maybe Edwards?

Edwards is practically a lock, Hoyer practically said so. I'd guess one of Pineyro or Johnson too if they're willing to send a second starter since both lost time to injury. Russell and Soler are nice candidates since they lost time to injury too.

I don't think Schwarber will go because I think it'd be more beneficial to have him at Instructs, where he can get coached up at catcher. He could use some rest too; I know Bryant went last year after a long college/pro season but Schwarber signed sooner and the catching has to be more draining.

Guys who have a chance to get added to the 40-man are always good candidates (like Beeler last year). Maybe Rafael Lopez, Zach Cates or Eric Jokisch?

Paniagua and Hannemann are other options if they want to speed up older guys at lower levels. McKinney would be a good choice but they only get one candidate below AA (the deadline is 8/1 so Almora's promotion was well-timed if he's AFL bound).

Based on that, my guesses:

CJ Edwards

Ivan Pineyro or Pierce Johnson

Zach Cates

Eric Jokisch or Andrew McKirahan

Rafael Lopez

Stephen Bruno

Addison Russell

Jacob Hannemann

FWIW, last year, I was like 4 for 8 in my guesses and a few of them were telegraphed like CJ Edwards has been this year.

If Johnson makes it thru August healthy, he'll hit 100 IP this year (104 if he has 6 starts 33+ IP like he did in July). He had 118 last year. I think Pineyro is a much better candidate. Plus, if Johnson is still having control issues, I think rest would be better.

You're right, Johnson has a sizable advantage in IP this season. The only thing favoring Pierce is that he doesn't have any legitamate options if he doesn't pitch in the AFL (don't think they'd ship him off to Mexico). Pineyro could easily log innings in the DWL and DWL minor league if he isn't in the AFL.

This is an ignorant question but how much of a delay to start 2015 would be needed to get that extra year of control for Baez and Bryant if they came up when rosters expanded on sept 1?

About 7 weeks. It's about 3 weeks normally, and every day they're up this year would be another day they need to be held down.

Roughly Memorial Day, maybe a bit before.
