It is the best board I've found for Cubs' info and discussion.

clearly you haven't visited desipio then.

Hot sprot taeks fo' dat ass.

That dude is to Cubs blogs as Neifi is to the best SS of all time. And he evidently hates Yellon. It's like Glass Joe fighting himself.

Meh, desipio is cool, even though Andy still mentions in his infrequent posts something I said on here about him 7 years ago.

If he ever went back to semi-regular posting and ripping on Cubs beat writers and bloggers, I'd visit every day.

Bah. That's disappointing on Rhee. Rhee and Whitenack are reminders that TJS certainly doesn't have a 100% success rate.

Actually, I went straight to bed after the game but Rhee definitely got stronger as the game wore on. His splitter was his K pitch and after about the 2nd inning he had batters flailing at it. FB is still nothing special , 85-89, but he did touch 90 and 92 on the gun later. Overall his line: 6 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 89 pitches.

Marcus Mateo came in for 2 IP and was filthy. 1 H, 5 K, 0 BB. Several third strikes were looking. Just nasty stuff for one night anyway.

Rosscup couldn't find the plate at all.

isn't marcos mateo like 35 years old now

was he the dude that pitched in our rotation in 2006 after everyone got hurt?

fake edit:

Oh wait that was Juan Mateo.

I try to post every once in awhile but usually have a guy like Kyle tell me why I'm wrong within the minute, so kind of defeats the purpose of posting. I check the board 3-4 times a day so will try to start posting a little more often.

I would think that being less wrong would be a better solution.

Everybody starts somewhere.

I was pretty meatballish still around the time I started posting. Good arguments with smart posters finally brought me around.

I think part of the problem for lurkers now is that there's this expectation that they have to already understand all the SABR stuff before they can start posting. And that's just silly. It's a moving target. As the game changes so do all the old SABR rules. It wasn't that long ago that being SABR-savvy meant loving guys like Adam Dunn, which certainly isn't the case anymore. Fielding and baserunning are emphasized more now. With the lower run environment, the sacrifice bunts we used to hate are strategically viable in a much larger number of scenarios. Looking forward, I think we're going to start to see more focus on things like power hitting, positional flexibility, and bullpen usage.

I don't know what my point is. Lurkers should post more often though.

There is a certain set of people here that hammer people with ideas that differ from their own, for years it made it pretty difficult for anyone new or anyone outside that circle of people to post here. For a long segment of time I didn't post at all both because the product on use field wasn't worth paying attention to and because people here were just plain mean. It may have changed somewhat since then, but I understand why it can't be a difficult environment for new folks.

I'm not saying new posters shouldn't be welcome, but scaring off bad opinions is why NSBB has a higher concentration of worthwhile opinions than any other Cubs site.

Or we could try to correct those uninformed opinions. Let's not pretend that we don't enjoy when a meatball comes on here spouting ignorance and we all jump in to get our licks in.

Well it can be a bit of a hive mind here because you guys scare off any other opinions so the only ones left are your own. Just because they are the only ones voiced here doesn't mean they are the only "worthwhile" ones.

That's a terrible opinion. You should go now.

I thought about making that point, and groupthink is a concern, but there have been some pretty good debates in the past from our smarter posters who have differing opinions on a particular topic. Sure there are a lot of bad arguments to get to that one good one, but the good ones are worth the bad ones I think.

Oh, I have no issue with that either. I just don't like either. I'd certainly choose Andy over Al though. My guess is he's NotTomRicketts.

Your probably right and I think most people here have learned to ignore Kyle, it's part of the NSBB initiation process.

** not that Kyle can't be nice every now and then or have an informed opinion from time to time

You're not wrong.

I don't know what the solution is. Maybe if we unbanned Da Bum then the board would be more focused on him. Then the lurkers wouldn't get swarmed when they pop up with an uninformed opinion, and we might see a few people start to get more active.

i think there's a big difference in the way that people are treated when they openly admit that they aren't really up on the latest metrics, but would like to learn. posters are a lot less hostile to those types than, say, the davearm2 types.

Three years later, davearm was right about everything.

See, and you drove him off with your bitter rage lol (don't remember much about davearm but the name sounds familiar).

This exactly. As someone who has been reading these boards for years as an outsider, I can tell you there are obviously a bunch of smart posters here. But among those posters, there's a fairly sharp divide between the ones who use their knowledge to correct meatball-ish opinions and who actually do challenge you to think more critically about statistical analysis...and those who are just chomping at the bit to obliterate you with a scarcastic response and a snarky gif. I think everyone drifts into that territory from time to time (and maybe rightly so sometimes) but some people live there and it can be quite offputting to infrequent/non-posters.

Just the two cents of someone kind of on the outside looking in.

I'd love to see the lurkers start posting frequently. I was anti metrics for a long time. I lurked here, while posting elsewhere, until I realized that saber metrics weren't the devil. I learn something here every day. The board has humor, extremely up to the date news, and excellent discussions on many topics, baseball related and more. But the lurkers already know this, because some are here multiple times a day and have been here longer than me.

Just jump in, everyone winds up on the wrong side of an argument from time to time. Learn from it and jump into the next one.

That said, if there's a better minor league forum on a team site anywhere, I'd be shocked. This place is the [expletive].

Exactly, they created the environment and have been living in it for so long they can't even recognize when they are being A-holes. *shrug* it is what it is. plenty here worth reading on a daily basis. that's what keeps me here.

If being told you are dumb or getting a snarky GIF makes you not post, then you don't deserve to post.

It's not that it makes you not post, but the majority of the time it isn't necessary. Most of the time, approaching a post from the position of, "That's wrong, and here's why..." is just as effective as, "ZOMG, you're such an idiot, and here's why..."

Telling someone they're dumb is not necessary. Effectively break down their argument and they'll probably realize their post was dumb on their own.
