If being told you are dumb or getting a snarky GIF makes you not post, then you don't deserve to post.

It's not that it makes you not post, but the majority of the time it isn't necessary. Most of the time, approaching a post from the position of, "That's wrong, and here's why..." is just as effective as, "ZOMG, you're such an idiot, and here's why..."

Telling someone they're dumb is not necessary. Effectively break down their argument and they'll probably realize their post was dumb on their own.

I'm not saying new posters shouldn't be welcome, but scaring off bad opinions is why NSBB has a higher concentration of worthwhile opinions than any other Cubs site.

Or we could try to correct those uninformed opinions. Let's not pretend that we don't enjoy when a meatball comes on here spouting ignorance and we all jump in to get our licks in.

This exactly. As someone who has been reading these boards for years as an outsider, I can tell you there are obviously a bunch of smart posters here. But among those posters, there's a fairly sharp divide between the ones who use their knowledge to correct meatball-ish opinions and who actually do challenge you to think more critically about statistical analysis...and those who are just chomping at the bit to obliterate you with a scarcastic response and a snarky gif. I think everyone drifts into that territory from time to time (and maybe rightly so sometimes)

but some people live there and it can be quite offputting to infrequent/non-posters.

Just the two cents of someone kind of on the outside looking in.

Exactly, they created the environment and have been living in it for so long they can't even recognize when they are being A-holes. *shrug* it is what it is. plenty here worth reading on a daily basis. that's what keeps me here.

**wtf did the "!'s" come from

Can you tell when you are being a whiny baby?

Well, the latter takes a lot more effort and this isn't a job, it's a time wasting device.

Good job guys, excellent really...

I knew they'd show themselves fairly quickly here, it's like chumming the water for the sharks. Back to lurking quick!

Seriously, all the whining about being picked on and not having your hand held gently along the way is just silly.

There's still at least the dudes with like 200 posts in 10 years.

feels the need to post to see how many posts I have

Nope, not 200 posts. 10 years, check. And yeah, I guess it is kind of strange to feel like I know the regular posters so well and yet remain in the shadows. :-)

It really doesn't seem to, judging by the posters who aren't sarcastic in most of their replies.

I see Kyle being sarcastic and goony suggesting that someone with thin skin will have a hard time pretty much anywhere on the internet (but being a bit more blunt and condescending about it).

I hope you can take a step back and see that while that certainly isn't ideal behavior, bluntly calling people out for being rude is very similar behavior to the original rudeness. It is just a different trigger for acting in a similar way.

As you rightly suggest, there are more subtle and preferable ways to offer alternatives.

I think you've been right on until this. They'll possibly realize that, but all too often, I think it's more likely that they'll defend their dumb opinion to the bitter end with whatever ridiculous strands of logic they can find.

A lot of posters here routinely get away with treating other people like total crap and when someone calls them out for it everyone else piles on,it's exactly the reason you have so few posters here. Just my opinion. I'll go back to just reading again and quit trying to swim up river. Enjoy the grand jackassery as it's always been.

That's true. I guess I was speaking for myself there...I tend to be pretty objective in my thinking and I don't really have a problem admitting when I'm wrong, but I also recognize that way of responsing is pretty much in the minority among most people.

Glad i could start all this mess... As a long time lurker from the Cubs.com board coming over when Tim (SanClementeFan?) made this, I don't post not because I'm scared of someone arguing with me. In fact I relish it in real life. It's really because there is nothing I could add to the board. I just enjoy getting info, not opinion, about the Cubs and the minor league affiliates. I don't visit other boards outside of this one except psd(which is unreadable) and I did that because someone on this board would always quote Ty. I guess to sum it up, others are most likely in the same boat that I am....it's a great repository of daily information.

isn't marcos mateo like 35 years old now

was he the dude that pitched in our rotation in 2006 after everyone got hurt?

fake edit:

Oh wait that was Juan Mateo.

They're cousins.

Mateo is 30 but his stuff was good enough in the DWL last offseason that he was taken with the 15th pick in the Rule 5 Draft (and had some top pick overall buzz).

Seconded.

Well, getting past the "who's mean to who" part of things, it's nice to realize that there's people getting value out of the board. There's a very, very familiar community around here...nice to have some unfamiliar faces pop up.

i wouldn't really judge them based on their bonuses. they're 15 or 16 year old kids when they're being scouted and signed. that's a very inexact science; some guys (like carlos henry) are going to look okay in workouts and then be horribad baseball players. other ones won't look like they have amazing tools, but then end up being very good (castro, alcantara are recent examples).

Luis Acosta got 7 figures to strike out like half the time in the DSL.

To your other point, Arismendy Alcántara, Starlin Castro and Welington Castillo all got 5-figure bonuses.

Definitely.

Lurkers should definitely chime in if they have a few thoughts (don't tell me you guys don't, you definitely could add something). I lurked a long time and broke in with the Game Thread forum during the 04 season. It's always nice to get new blood in here.

My preference would be that we talk more about baseball (or football, life, etc.) and less about each other. Goony (and others, just using GET/JCF because he was the one you quoted) may be abrupt and sarcastic, but he normally stays on point with his criticism. He may make the person he's talking to feel like he's calling them an idiot, but he doesn't actually call them an idiot.

A line has to be drawn somewhere. It's very hard and very fuzzy to say that any response has to be "nice". It's a much cleaner line to say not to directly attack a poster. Calling an argument stupid is allowed here. Calling a person stupid is not. The mods do a very good job patrolling that line.

Three years later, davearm was right about everything.

Not everything.

You put it best the other day when it comes to his views on positional value...flat earth society.
