So if Schwarber hits well at Daytona in like the 15 games that won't get rained out is he set up to start 2015 at Tennessee?

Probably, isn't that roughly the sam timeline as Bryant?

He would have more games at Daytona than Bryant did.

Yeah, I'd say so. And I'd also say he's a permanent LF if that's the case.

I'd think so, too. His bat is so advanced and as much as I'm encouraged by the reports of his defense behind the plate, I'm not sure it's worth the delay. Especially if there seems to be a good chance he's just not strong enough there in general. But if I'm wrong that's a good thing to be wrong about.

I'd also be happy if he sticks in LF. Some doubt he can (law, I think?) but the scouting reports I've heard, overall, lead me to think he's athletic enough. Not to mention every report seems to rave about his game IQ.

i can't really think of the last player who has done it, but it would be pretty cool to have schwarber as a LF who then catches once a week. certainly would give some added roster flexibility rather than having to carry a koyie hill/john baker type who do nothing but catch and hit badly when the starting catcher needs a rest.

@billazbbphotog: Justin Steele strikes out side in pro debut for AZL #Cubs. FB 92 w/ effective curveball 73-74. Very nice first outing.

@billazbbphotog: Also a good AZL #Cubs performance by Carson Sands. 1-2-3 inning w/ 2 Ks. FB 91-92, effective CH & CU.

Possibly the closest I can recall was what the Yankees did with C/OF's in the 50's and early 60's: Yogi Berra, Elston Howard and Johnny Blanchard. They just had to keep Yogi's bat in the lineup somehow.

Don't the Indians kinda do this with Santana? He plays 3B/1B most of the time but plays catcher once a week?

wonder if zagunis will be going to kane county to play catcher with schwarber leaving for daytona.

That's what I was thinking last night too. Hope it happens.

I was under the impression that Zagunis was the more likely guy to stick at catcher, but he's played more games in LF than behind the plate so far in Boise.

I think Theo/Jed don't care about them being behind the plate this year. They just want everyone to get as many ABs as possible and evaluate where they should be in the offseason. Plus it'll save some wear and tear. That being said, I do believe Zagunis will play at mainly C next season.

Evan Gattis last year - 39 games in LF & 48 games at C

his fielding in LF was pretty dismal, though

I am almost positive that Craig Biggio was still doing some backup catching before his full time switch to 2B.

Baseball-reference says no. He went straight from catching 139 games in 1991 to zero for the rest of his career.

It looks like he was introduced slowly to the OF while being a near full-time catcher, but once he went to 2B, there was no more catching.
