Schwarble

Off a lefty knuckleballer.

Baez finishes 1/6 with a 2B and 1 K, Bryant 0/5 with 2 Ks. Neither player walked. edit: Alcantara 0-4 with 2 K

"We have Mendy (Alcantara) leading off, then one batter later they got me then after a another batter they have Kris Bryant," Baez said. "They're going to have to pitch to one of us. I'm pretty sure one of us three is going to have a good game every day."

I thought Schwarber was only supposed to be catching once a week. It seems like he's catching way more than that.

This is just total conjecture on my part, but not only do I agree that it seems like he's catching more often, but I'm thinking maybe the inclusion of Russell combined with the fact that Schwarber is getting decent reviews behind the plate has them rethinking their original idea. Before Russell, you could make the argument there would be space for Schwarber in the OF. With Russell in the fold, he's blocked if he's not playing catcher. To be honest, I'm not concerned with his catching ability if we have a lineup that includes him, Baez, Bryant, and Rizzo. Lord help whoever faces the Cubs if they acquire Stanton and keep Schwarber at catcher.

C Schwarber

1B Rizzo

2B Castro

SS Russell

3B Baez

LF Bryant

CF Alcantara

RF Stanton

Everyone in that lineup has the power to go deep 20 times a year. Alcantara might be the only guy you wouldn't bet on hitting 20 in that lineup.

But back to Schwarber. Would it really be that bad if we had a Mike Piazza style catcher on the team?

So wait, you think we can acquire Stanton without giving up any of Castro, Rizzo, Bryant, Baez, Russell, Alcantara and Schwarber??

Sign me up for that trade.

"Hi Miami, this is Theo... Yeah, the rumors are true: we'd like to trade for Stanton. So feel free to put together a package of any of our non-great players and I'm pretty sure we could find a way to part with them mmm'kay ok thanks!!!"

I think they could keep Rizzo, Bryant, and Schwarber (because he can't be traded yet). I don't think the Cubs would trade Castro (or that the Marlins would want his contract). So, that leaves Baez, Alcantara, Russell, Soler, Almora, McKinney as the top hitters the Cubs would trade. If I'm the Cubs, I'd like to keep Soler because of the long-term committment he's signed too. Plus, I think getting Stanton and trading an IF (or 2) would potentially leave Bryant at 3B, and I'd like to keep Soler's corner OF bat.

I think one of Baez/Russell definitely would have to be dealt (I'm guessing Baez for the power to potentially replace Stanton's). One of McKinney/Almora would probably go. Probably a Pierce Johnson over Edwards because of injury history and potential. I'd hate to throw Alcantara on top of this, but he could be of some interest to the Marlins due to his versatility to play all 3 positions up the middle, where they aren't great (though Ozuna has been pretty solid in CF). Then maybe add another low level project pitcher, like Blackburn?

Is Baez, Almora, Johnson, Alcantara, Blackburn too much for Stanton and a pitcher?

Oh yeah, whoops. I got caught up in my own craziness I didn't piece that one together. One of Baez or Russell has to go for Stanton.

I've been a broken record about a Russell, Almora, Soler package for Stanton. I think Miami would demand one of Baez/Russell for obvious reasons and Soler specifically because of my own suspicions that they would like a RF'er who projects to adequately replace Stanton who also happens to be Cuban which would allow them to market him to their Cuban fan base. If I'm not mistaken, the Marlins have half heartedly been in on a lot of the big Cuban FA's but gotten nowhere because they get outbid, but I'm sure they'd love to have one of these guys in the fold for marketing purposes alone.

I think Russell, Almora, Soler can get it done, and there's probably not another team in baseball that would want to match that offer or could without crippling their farm system or creating a hole at the MLB level. Conceivably you deal Russell because you already got Baez, Almora because you got Alcantara, and Soler because you're getting Stanton. Maybe add one of Johnson or Edwards if they need it. I forget who (maybe TT?), but they suggested throwing in more guys to expand the deal to include Andrew Heaney, which I'm not opposed to either (but don't know if the Marlins would go that far). Also, it goes without saying that any deal for Stanton must come with a pre-negotiated contract extension in place, ala the Johan Santana deal.

Either way the beauty is if they trade for Stanton they'll be amazing, and if they don't they'll still be amazing.
