Our collection of offensive talent has to be near historical levels, it's not even a question anymore if we have the best system in MLB, it's who's #2 behind us.

Is there a precedent to having 3 top 10, 4 top 20 guys in a system and then another 3-5 within the top 75-100 (Soler, Schwarbs, Tseng, Almora, Pierce, CJ)? Maybe the Brewers when they had Braun, Weeks, Fiedler, Hardy, Hart and Gallardo?

Those guys all panned out pretty well

They never had all of them in the farm system at the same time.

Outside of Gallardo, i would've guessed they overlapped.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm a bit torn on this trade. I love Addison Russell and how much he contributes to our stacked minor league roster, but it just doesn't seem like we got that much outside of him and we gave up 2 great trade chips to get him.

McKinney seems like a slightly better version of Almora, is very young and has a ton of bust potential. Straily is 25 years old and it'll take Bosio magic to make him anything better than kinda average.

It just seems like we put all our eggs on one player (Russell) and that seems awful risky for a legit TOR pitcher in Shark and a very solid veteran in Hammel. I feel like we should have done better than Straily and maybe better than McKinney. Somebody convince me I'm wrong.

Remember McKinney was just drafted out of HS last July and aggressively pushed to high-A. His BB/K numbers look good all while he skipped a level. I wouldn't have complained if the Cubs actually assigned him to Kane County to start of.

After quickly going through a spreadsheets it looks like the last time there was a large collection of Top 100 prospects (that were heavy on the top tier side) might've been 2007 Devil Rays.

#3 Delmon Young

#7 Evan Longoria

#17 Reid Brignac

#35 Jeff Nieman

#37 Jake McGee

#79 Elijah Dukes

#97 Wade Davis

The 2008 Rays weren't so bad either...

#2 Evan Longoria

#10 David Price

#15 Jake McGee

#17 Wade Davis

#39 Reid Brignac

#59 Desmond Jennings

#99 Jeff Nieman

If anyone wants to find out for sure, here you go:

I just did a CTRL+F and typed in a team name I knew had good prospects. Each time you tab over to a new year it will highlight how many times they're mentioned.

EDIT: only goes to 2010. A quick look up of the 2011 Top 100 yields the Royals with this ridiculous collection:

#8 Eric Hosmer

#9 Mike Moustakas

#10 Wil Myers

#18 John Lamb

#19 Mike Montgomery

#51 Christian Colon

#68 Danny Duffy

#69 Jake Odorizzi

#83 Chris Dwyer

Almora is a top 20-25; if McKinney is a slightly better version of him, that makes him a top 20-25 prospect. And I still fully expect Raul Alcantara to be the PTBNL unless his recovery reports put up a red flag.

So that's a Top 10 prospect, a top 20-25 prospect, a nice project for Bosio, and possibly a high ceiling pitching prospect. It's no Gausman and Bundy, but I don't think anyone really expected that to happen.

Catching up on Len's twitter feed, looks like even he's getting frustrated with fans' lack of understanding...

Len Kasper @LenKasper · 1h

I REPEAT: stockpiling SS's is a good thing. Sheffield/Cabrera/A-Rod/Yount/Matt Williams/Billy Hamilton all began as SS's. Long list.

If the Cubs were stockpiling LF's, then yes, you could be concerned.

Cubs got best 3 months of Hammel's career & sold very very high on Samardzija who wasn't gonna sign long-term deal. & the issue is...what?

Love the deal as is, but I'm curious who the PTBNL becomes. To me, the "or cash" part implies that we shouldn't expect it to be an impact guy and I think Law has basically said as much. Either way, love Russel and McKinney and I hope Bosio can work some of his magic on Straily. Edited by BeerHere

A couple of Russell highlights from ST

http://m.mlb.com/chc/video/topic/26271672/v31527213/oaklad-russell-smacks-a-double-to-center/?c_id=chc Double off Brian Wilson

He sort of reminds me of Miguel Tejada there...probably just the build and the uniform

Def looks like Tejada. I thought the same thing.

And gosh he is very fast

Assuming you mean "shouldn't?"

Sorry my bad. I fixed that.

I'm kind of expecting the PTBNL to be the A's Alcantara, from how much his name was bandied about yesterday, and the fact that he's injured right now.

If true then that means that the A's top three prospects are Cubbies

Were was the A's Alcantara mentioned yesterday in reports? Cash doesn't really make any sense since the normally cash strapped A's are now on the hook for 5M after taking on Shark and Hammel.

So last year Russell had 17 hr, 29 doubles, and 10 triples. Dayuuum!

Have you looked at what Alcantara has done in half a season at AAA? 10 hr, 23 doubles and 11 triples. Two years older, two levels higher.

Yeah, we're loaded.

Yea if the PTBNL is something like Neil Ramirez and works out like it is now in that Rangers trade, that would be [expletive] amazing.

Alacantra being included in this deal would be quite the steal for the Cubs. The A's top three prospects and a young MLB ready upside arm. :good:

I seriously doubt Alcantara is in the deal. Ideally it makes sense, but it's been reported that the PTBNL will be insignificant. That and it's "or cash" so yeah. Let's not get our expectations up.
