Just like the way that title sounds, plus these two seem sort of linked. They have until the end of the season to prove they deserve to be ML players as they have potential replacements coming up behind them at AAA (or in Olt's case, potential displacement by Valbuena to make room for Baez). Figured we can track them here. They both have been brutal lately by any measure, but Olt has broken out tonight with a an absolute bomb over the Monster and a rocket double to left-center.

I have an irrational desire for Olt to be successful. Reminds of me of Billy rooting for Jerry in "Little Big League".

EDIT: Forgot that we already have a Lake thread....that I started.

I'm rooting for Olt to make it. No one is pleased with a .150 BA but we're not going anywhere and I say let Bill Mueller work it out with Olt and Lake. I can live with a .260/25HR above average fielding 3rd baseman, as most of the other ML teams can.

Because hitting .260 is just easy and anyone can do it with a little elbow grease.

Actually, I don't think that is true.

Sort of wrong that Olt can't particpate in the Olt Watch (or something)

Yeah I could live with an .800 OPS IN all star, too. Because that's what he'd be if he were hitting .260.

All this "these two", "they" and "them" talk is confusing given the current title.

Maybe he's talking about Olt's eyes.

You guys must have missed the edit.

I mean, if you are going to go through the effort to add the edit and change the title, why not just rewrite the actual post?

Olt still leads NL rookies in HRs (11) and is 2nd in RBIs (27) - this amuses me

It jusy makes me sad because it gives glimpses as to how much of a better place the Cubs would be in if he had panned out.

If the Cubs had gotten league-average production from the playing time given to Olt, Schierholtz, Coghlan, Sweeney and Kalish, they'd be over .500 and in the playoff picture.

I was the first responder, I didn't miss the edit. I was just trying to tell a story with a humorous climax.

league average for what? bench players? starters? if it's the latter, it's not exactly news that we'd be good if we were average at all the positions where we aren't well above average. anyone would.

if it's the former, i'm not sure i agree.

Would anyone be upset if Olt stayed on the Cubs and had a Rob Deer like career? Lots of home runs and strikeouts, crappy batting average, up and down OBP, and average 1 WAR per season? With average to above average defense?

That would be okay if we had seven other above average position players and a great pitching staff.

Yes, I'd be upset if we had a 1 WAR player playing often enough to reach his 1 WAR.

If you're saying he's accumulating 1 win by spot starting and pinch hitting, then sure. But then I'd wonder why he isn't playing often enough to produce more.

I would not be upset if they kept a bench player that could crush lefties and hit for some power with little else. But Olt hasn't even done that this year. He's only a mid-700 OPS against lefties and a negative WAR overall.

If Olt can figure out how to hit .180, he's worth keeping as a backup 1B/3B/maybe LF guy because of the power.

I hate saying it, as I was very hopeful of more, but that's his upside to me at this point.
