hope he sticks by his word that he's in this for the long haul and isn't leaving anytime soon

don't blame him at all if he doesn't, though

Yep, I'll echo David. It would be great to retain him, as I've been happy with his contributions to the system thus far. In that same vein, though, I can't begrudge him moving on to bigger things. Seems almost inevitable.

does anyone recall/have the recent interview where he basically said he had no interest in leaving until the cubs won a world series or 5?

it was something like that...and feels like it was in the last few weeks (maybe post-draft stuff)

If the Cubs win a World series, someone will hire him as GM for life.

San Deigo is a messed up franchise with the manager actually having more power than the GM.

also, i think this speaks to the current FO's system, that the team that has been one of, if not the, worst winning teams on the major league level over the last few seasons has it's third in charge on teams' short list for GM interviews when openings occur.

It could also have something to do with the fact that McLeod came from the Padres.

or that he's a damn good talent judge. if you're a smart team it doesn't matter if someone is familiar with the organization or not, it's whether an individual is the most capable in running the organization well.

I didn't say that he's not a "damn good talent judge". The Padres might want him because they hired him before and obviously thought he had talent.

Get a grip. The Cubs entire front office (including Theo) use to work for them. Baseball is the ultimate old boy network.

McLeod has been high on every media list of top GM candidates I've seen published over the past couple of years. To acknowledge that he is well thought of in baseball circles (not just with the Padres) doesn't mean you're on the front office's jock.

Yes, that's a given. Marveling that a team would want to interview him despite the major league team being garbage for years so that must mean he's some kind of farm system super-genius and boy oh boy our FO is amazing is just silly.
