Fascinating longform read here: http://www.sbnation.com/longform/2014/6/18/5818380/effective-velocity-pitching-theory-profile-perry-husband

The gist is that this guy's been promoting an ideology for pitching that is part intuitive, and part completely ignored. The basic premise is that because swing paths are longer for some areas of the strike zone, velocity in different portions of the zone are not equal. Therefore sequencing pitches in a way that the Effective Velocity is as disparate as possible can be really effective. Also interesting was the stuff on how MLB hitters are basically machines with bats timed to ~90 mph effective velocity, and while there's plenty of skill in being able to put bat to ball, it's not nearly as much in the hitter's control as we assume.

Fascinating. Really great find.

Finding out Derek Johnson is a believer makes it even more interesting, if only to see how it effects our pitching prospects.

Is there a difference? I'd imagine about the mid-way point since it can't possibly register as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand.

3-4 MPH or more or less?

Radar guns are supposed to read it out of hand although stalker pros measure out of hand and when it reaches the plate. The velo typically drops 8mph by the time it gets to the plate.
