The Blackhawks have two choices:

1) Hit on a *lot* of prospects in the upcoming seasons

2) Enjoy this as their last season as an elite team for awhile

I think they have a shot to do No. 1, of course, but ick.

Sharp will be gone by the end of the next season. Hossa will be "retired" ala Chris Pronger within the next couple of seasons. The salary cap should increase to 74 million next season and continue to rise(although this year its at 69 when most people said 71). It wont be as bad as the last time Toews and Kane had new contracts kick in. They might take a slight step back in 2015-16 season but the Hawks should remain in the hunt for the Cup for the next decade. In 3 years people will look back and say the Hawks got a bargain.

I don't think you can just call 'Chris Pronger retirement' and it works out that way.

Not exactly, and there still will be a slight cap hit involved. Hossa has a history of back problems.

Quite a bit different from several severe concussions and loss of vision in one eye. NHL has been very strict in its attempts to stop teams from circumventing the cap. My guess is that now that Philly is getting away with it, the NHL is going to be very wary of other teams looking for that loophole. Also, you have to actually hope Hossa doesn't want to play.

which of course is going to be another reason that the league is going to be really tight with allowing the Hawks some kind of loophole....the league really hated these types of contracts, voided several before the recent CBA and made sure they were not allowed in the new CBA. Here is the thing, you wanted the guy when you had almost no cap room. Made it happen anyway and have been rewarded with a couple of cups and could get more because of the the contract. Had a chance to get out from underneath the contract after the last CBA and didnt. I don't think anyone is going to be shedding any tears for the Hawks on this one

Hossa has a chance to still be a useful player by the end of his contract. If he does get hurt, the team can use part of his pro rated cap hit for a replacement (ala Khabibulin this year). If he stays healthy, he could still be very good in a less demanding 3rd line role.

In regards to Sharp, the Hawks are going to need to give his money to Saad in a couple years. Hopefully by then Saad will have grown into that kind of player. The most dangerous thing that a team can do is hang on to their successful core for too long. The late '80s/ early 90s Bears teams come to mind. They all got old at the same time and took years to rebuild. If they do it right, the Hawks can gradually rebuild from within.

Yep, follow the Detroit model.

Sharp most definitely will be gone after the upcoming season.

I think Hossa can be productive in the league if he learns a few new tricks. He certainly has the strength and ability to stand in front of the goalie on the PP like Ciccarelli or Holmstrom. He is also a work out warrior, so no reason to think that he will not be able to be somewhat productive until he is 40.

I can see some team signing Saad to a very large RFA deal that would make it extremely hard for the Hawks to match. Would be prudent for the Hawks to get him extended before the season ends.

Hasn't the Detroit model in the hard cap era been to get worse every year?

yeah, they can't get a free agent to sign there to save their lives. some suspect it's cause babcock is a hardass, others because of detroit itself. i just think they're on the wrong side of many years of sustained success (which made it difficult to obtain top-line players outside of free agency) and a lot of the big free agent gets have found greener pastures for one reason or another (going home to minnesota, playing w/buddies, money, etc.)

I think part of the FA issue is that they have targeted the wrong guys. They got Weiss last yr and that has been nothing short of a disaster so far. But the main ones they have missed out on are Suter/Parisse(both wanted to go to Minn and I dont think the Wings were matching the offers they received from Minn) Myers wanted to go to Pittsburgh, he could have gotten a better deal from almost any other team. Niskenan and Boyle are a little perplexing, but it is really just 2 guys picking another team when all things seemed to be equal. If the Wings could have decent health this season, they could easily be a contender in the East this. I know the Rangers just went to the finals, but I have a hard time saying that the Rangers and the Caps are clearly better than the Wings....actually I think the Wings are better than the Caps. And the Rangers could miss the playoffs again this season

If a team offered Saad $6 million+ and the Hawks didn't match, that team would have to give the Hawks their 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks in the following draft. In this day and age, I'm not sure if any GM wants to do that. Offer sheets rarely ever happen. PK Subban didn't get offer sheeted.

Not that it will matter, they'll give Saad a new contract before then.

I guess this is a couple days old, but Kevin Dineen is replacing Kompon as Assistant Coach. Can't hurt bringing in a guy with head coaching experience. He did okay in Florida.

The key to sustained success in the NHL, IMO, is to draft well and make smart, sell-high trades. For example, selling Bollig while you still could was very smart (though one wonders why they gave him a multi-year deal in the first place). If someone - anyone - wants Bickell or Versteeg, you do it.

And I completely agree re Sharp. He's on the wrong side of 30 with a high cap hit. Don't expect an exciting return. Probably a 1st and 4th, or something like that.

For the production he provides, Sharp is a bargain compared to what other similar players are getting.

A 1st and a 4th would be a very exciting return for Sharp particularly since the Hawks can't afford to take back much in the way of salary. This is supposed to be a very good draft class next year.

How did "Arizona" get on national TV?

It still pisses me off they kept that team.

Also, I heard today for the first time that the AHL trophy for Executive of the Year is the James Hendry Memorial Award. No b.s. I think I also heard their Coach of the Year trophy is named after Alpo Suhonen.
