Meh. I'd rather have one guy in the top 3 than every single guy from 150-199.

I can't call it a great draft. A great draft is when you have 1.1 and Bryce Harper is sitting there. They made the best of a frustrating spot with No. 4 in a three-player draft.

you can only have a great draft once every 27 years, got it

Well, once ever. That moment has passed. Unless another guy named Bryce Harper ever becomes draft eligible.

Cubs reportedly have a deal with Zagunis - 615K (100K under slot).

Sweet.

On the other hand, it would make more sense to judge a draft based on what they were capable of doing.

Eh, it's just stupid semantics. If you draft 30th and get the 15th talent, you had a "great" draft, but 14 teams did better than you, so is it really all that great?

They did a great job having an OK draft.

With family and close friends beside him at home, Eagles pitcher Carson Sands was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fourth round with the 109th overall pick.

The left-hander spent much of the day texting with FSU assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Martin Jr., but at the end of the day he decided to forgo his dream of playing for the hometown Seminoles and instead will begin his career as a professional baseball player.

No mention of $$.

I like Day 1 a hell of a lot more after Day 2. Anything cool on Day 3 is gravy now.

There's a day 3?

This thing got pretty pointless about 250 picks ago

CJ Edwards. Pick #1464. We haven't found our own CJ Edwards yet. Scouts better have done their homework! Stay tuned all day long Kyle because you want to say you heard his name, whoever he is, on the conference call 30 years ago when he was first selected.

Catching up on the draft, and my initial thought is that I like this crop of arms better, so far, than last year's. Looks like they took some upside gambles, and if they don't draft arms early, they simply had to take those gambles at some point. I'm guessing that they feel really comfortable about what it would take to get Cease to pop him there, otherwise, they could've waited. I'd love to be a fly on the wall to find out what their plans are to add elite arm talent, though, because there's only so much stockpiling/gambling that you can do before you have to really push to get those elite arms in the system, even if it leads to gambling a bit earlier in the draft.

Day of the draft I liked Jackson or Gordon over Schwarber easy. That's before I knew much about him. However I like Schwarber + Sands and Cease over Jackson and meh. Schwarber seems like a cool guy, which doesn't help his baseball ability but makes it easy as a fan to root for him.

Don't forget you can catch Stinnett and Maryland vs Virginia (and likely high 2015 first rounder Nathan Kirby) today at 11 am CT on ESPN2.

Could they be pointed toward the international market in this regard? I know there is a cap on how much they can spend there, but I am not terribly familiar with how that works.

I know much more about the NFL and NBA drafts, but based on some comments from some of the authorities here and the reading I've done on various sites, sounds like this has been a solid approach relative to what was available to the Cubs.

So now that we are onto the 11th round, are the Cubs in position to grab a tough sign guy and try to lure him?

And if so....who?

They'll probably take at least one, just as a backup for Cease. Maybe a few <$500k guys too a la Clifton in the 14th last year.

I'm guessing that they knew they couldn't get Jackson for less than the slot, so in order to get impact later they got a little less upside at the 4 spot. It would have been interesting to see how things would have played out with a healthy Hoffman around. At least he would have made it a "4 player" draft.

It sounds kind of backwards but the new draft rules seem to force teams to be creative. It almost seems like it forces teams to draft lesser players high, so they can sign them, not lose slot money or lose picks.
