@M_Montemurro: McLeod statement on Schwarber: Kyle has been 1 of premier performers in college ranks ... He displays what we look for in patience & power

Wow:

@sahadevsharma: McLeod says Schwarber was second on their list behind Aiken. That surprises me.

@BleacherNation: In release about the pick, Jason McLeod says Schwarber has the power and patience Cubs look for, and also the character.

@BruceMiles2112: McLeod added #Cubs felt Schwarber was best bet in draft "hands down" and makeup "off the charts.

@BruceMiles2112: #Cubs expect a quick signing of Schwarber. Boise a possible first destination.

Had a prominent college coach tell me late last year @Cubs pick, #IU’s Kyle Schwarber was the best pure hitter he’d seen in 15 years.

I seriously don't think many of the draft "gurus" even watched Schwarber play outside of the CWS last year (when he was dinged up pretty badly).

How much under slot do you think he will sign for and/or how much in savings would be needed to get a tough sign? Couple 100k or are we talking $1 mil+?

After 4, his next landing spot would likely have been 8 with the Rockies and they have a $3.16 million slot. Hope they can sign him for a smidge more than that, say $3.4 million, and save $1.2 million.

Nice, that's good to hear

Schwarber walked in 16% of PAs versus 10% SO rate with .283 ISO in pitchers park

This could change, but praise Jebus that at least for now K rate isn't a concern for once.

Go to the 3:12 mark. This was against Louisville this year and cleared the batters eye in CF. Predictions had it around 450 feet. I was at this game and it was impressive to say the last. Hit off of a lefty as well.

Enjoy.

He very much has a Brian Giles/Jason Kubel stance

@CarrieMuskat: ... hitting for power. His makeup is off the charts." McLeod on Schwarber #Cubs

@keithlaw: I believe it. They love the bat. RT @NW_7: @keithlaw Any thoughts McLeod saying the Cubs had Schwarber 2nd on their list behind Aiken?

"Swing, Kyle, swing!" is going to be my new ringtone.

So, the FO's first pick was Almora, largely because he can cover so much ground in CF. He'll have to now, because he'll have Schwarber to his right.

If he was 2 on their list he's not signing for far under slot.

Here's an HS football scouting video of his. There's a play 40 seconds in of him picking the ball and taking it 70 yards to the house that should give you a pretty good idea of his speed. Or at least his speed 3 years ago.

I love this pick. If he pans out, this is exactly what the lineup needs. Another lefty power bat with patience and ability to make contact. It seems like he was rated lower because nobody could figure out what his position was.

If the Cubs have seen enough to think he can play left field then it seems like an easy decision. I wanted Alex Jackson, but they've seen both these guys and they've seen Schwarber tear up college baseball for three years with power, patience, and contact. And he's left handed. And 2 or 3 years away.

Since I wasn't posting before the draft here was my board:

Aiken

Jackson

Rodon

Schwarber

Conforto

Pentecost

Gordon

Nola

Kolek

So again, LOVE THIS PICK!
