GRB trying to say that Arrieta is using pine tar or some other substance...

it came up last year too. he certainly looks like he's got something on his brim.

Yup. Probably dirt mixed with everything else he can get away with:

isn't the consensus from mlb players that they don't care if a pitcher uses pine tar? someone throwing a 95mph ball with better accuracy is a good thing for all involved parties.

Yeah I'm pretty most players (pitchers and hitters) are cool with using substances with the intent to get a better grip on the ball

it seems like a nervous tick or whatever, since he always touches the same exact spot on his hat. he does it after pitches, along with a number of shirt adjustments and whatnot

Cardinals get all bent out of shape when you lose your control and hit Matt Holliday with the pitch

damned if you do...

why do you think he touches the same spot?

The umps really are blind then, since they apparently can't see Arrieta touching his hat in between pitches.

Or maybe they just don't care, just as they don't care what the strikezone is.

If it's pine tar then they don't give a [expletive].

or that green froggy sunscreen stuff

That too. It always cracks me up how often pitchers start games with their forearms all shiny like they're drenched in sweat. They rub in that lotion just enough so it's not obviously smeared all over their skin.

Yeah, I thought there was a whole discussion about this awhile ago, and the outcome was that nobody is going to give a [expletive] as long as it's not a glob of goop dripping off the pitcher's hat or something.

Apparently someone just doesn't like the fact that Arrieta is really good, and he's not pitching on their team.

People have been using that "4 ER over his last 11 starts" stat a lot. Here's a partial list of good pitchers who have given up 4 or more ER in a single start in that exact timeframe: (spoilered for size)

Clayton Kershaw

David Price

Dallas Keuchel

Chris Sale

Zack Greinke

Madison Bumgarner

Gerrit Cole

Max Scherzer

Corey Kluber

Jacob deGrom

Chris Archer

Carlos Carrasco

Jose Quintana

Jon Lester

Tyson Ross

Cole Hamels

Johnny Cueto

Matt Harvey

Sonny Gray

John Lackey

Francisco Liriano

Collin McHugh

Gio Gonzalez

Carlos Martinez

Shelby Miller

Anthony DeSclafani

J.A. Happ

Jordan Zimmermann

Lance Lynn

Kyle Hendricks

Danny Salazar

Felix Hernandez

Jeff Samardzija

Michael Wacha

Jake Odorizzi

Scott Kazmir

Wei-Yin Chen

Wade Miley

Ubaldo Jimenez

Bartolo Colon

Mike Fiers

Alex Wood

Colby Lewis

Edinson Volquez

Garrett Richards

Mark Buehrle

Yovani Gallardo

Jesse Chavez

If you're thinking that list looks familiar, it probably does. It's the Fangraphs leaderboard for fWAR for qualified pitchers. The entire top 50 actually, with the exception of Jake Arrieta himself and A.J. Burnett, who was injured and not pitching for most of Arrieta's dominant run.

Pretty nuts to think about.

forget winning the Cy Young, looking at historical performances, Arrieta should get to kill Cy Young and then be him.

FWIW, ESPN's Cy Young predictor has Jake winning now. That hasn't been the case previously.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung

It has something called a "Shawn Tolleson" as #2 in the AL.

Colin McHugh? Yeah, he's in. But no Dallas Keuchel or David Price in the AL's TOP TEN????

nope
