Soooo they didn't really dominate them.

/Kyle

They totally did. It's the hockey equivalent of having a huge run differential and losing due to negative variance.

Or when you go with playoff appearances over wins (or, better yet, pythag) to talk about Epstein's track record in Boston.

Regardless Olt should be in there every [expletive] day, period, and put Valbuena at second. I'm sick of this "setting him up for success" [expletive]. What Renteria is setting him up for is stagnation or even regression. This is a 100 loss team, and Olt is 25 years old. He won't improve in a platoon at this age.

Maybe he's just not good enough that we should care whether he gets that playing time.

Then bring up Bryant. It's an insult to my intelligence that they act like they're protecting some elite talent with Olt. Throw him to the wolves or stop pretending he's still a prospect. Right?

I never interpreted their use of Olt as anything resembling "protecting an elite talent." How are they insulting your intelligence?

Yeah, that whole post had me WTFing so much that I couldn't even come up with a response.

That one's valid because a big part of a GM's job is to account for the state of the division.

I'm really starting to believe the Hawks might make it 3 out of 5 this year. I know the playoffs are hard and all, but this team is just so good.

I saw a stat the other day something stupid like in the last five years, the Blackhawks are .500 in games 1-3 of a playoff series and something crazy like 22-6 in games 4-7.

It was a violent post, but I think I agreed with what he was saying: They should be playing Luis at second and Olt at third almost every day. Olt has a high chance of sucking, but in this horrid season there is no reason for him to be sitting on the bench. Ever.

Why?

Because it's better to suck with players that MAY be here in a few years than suck with AAAA players like Ryan Sweeney who won't be here for sure.

Why is Mike Olt in that category? Because he's just short of 26 instead of 27 or whatever?

It just seems like a weird obsession because the guy could technically be termed a "prospect" before the year.

Why?

Because Mike Olt was, at one time a short while ago, a top prospect. And despite having struggles to make contact and not playing every day, he still leads the team in homers.

So, I'd ask you: Why not?

If Olt had enough AB's to qualify, he would be 12th in OPS among 3rd basemen, right ahead of Pedro Alvarez and David Wright. I know that's partially because he's a quasi-platoon player, but that's still not bad at all. He also plays good defense. Not a whole lot has to change for him to become a top 10 3B.

An amazing test case for showing the failures of OPS. He's got a .298 wOBA and Fangraphs has him below replacement level for the year (although that's half-defense).

He's got a .236 OBP. He's not been offensively valuable.

Olt is 5 for 33 with 14 K and no BB against RHP. Given his playing time so far, even approaching "below average" against them will get him more opportunities, but in the meantime there's also guys with some future with the team beyond 2014 that can get playing time(Barney, Kalish, Valbuena) to say nothing of the benefits of an actual meritocracy among similar players.

I want Valbuena to play 2B everyday. I know Barney has value, but Olt hits homeruns and that's a lot cooler.
