- Extend Bryant, bring him up - The expectation here is not coming away with an enormous steal like with Rizzo(especially dealing with Boras), but to get long-term cost certainty with Bryant with a slight discount from his likely market value for the risk.

You want to give Bryant an extension before coming up? Would that not be unprecedented? Why wouldn't you at least have him play a little bit first?

The Astros tried to do it with Springer.

I hate it, personally. You've got essentially a non-guaranteed team option for ever year he's under control. Converting that to guaranteed money is a huge risk.

Longoria only played in 6 games before signing, so that was likely close to finalized when they called him up. There may have been one or two others since, I'm not sure. You do that because 1) the front office isn't going to risk full service time years without more certainty (with good reason) and 2) if you have a lot of belief in his bat, you can suppress the overall value of the contract because your risk tolerance is greater than the expectation for that type of deal.

It seems to me the only way to have it make sense for the team is to go way under potential market value, and there is very little incentive for the player to accept such a deal, especially a year after getting $6+ million.

yeah, in the case of polanco the pirates were basically offering them a long term deal that bought out all of his arbitration years and maybe went a year or two into free agency. then polanco would've gotten to come up and play right away. instead he gets to hang out in indianapolis beating up on the international league for another month. ideally, this dopey system would go away in the next CBA so that small market teams and bad teams aren't being given a strong financial incentive to keep really good prospects in the minors leagues for a longer time.

Ideally. But the union rank and file don't want young punks spoiling it for guys hanging on for their tenure/pension. It would be nice if they revamped a lot of stuff "in the best interests of baseball" but they are all worried about carving up the pie to the benefit of themselves.

"A sense that we're ready to start winning in a year or 2" will never ever attract a FA.

Maybe not a free agent, but it could very well make a guy who's been here for parts of the past 6 seasons inclined to talk contract. I certainly don't expect any home town discount, but our money's as good as anyones, and we have to have enough to go around by now.

Even if you wanted to keep Bryant

Even if?

I was pre arguing with the argument that you'd have to give up one of Bryant or Baez to get a stellar starting OF or something like that. Meaning I still think with all the other guys we have we could net a pretty good player to fill a gaping hole in our OF. That's what I meant.

The Orioles are considered the leader for Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija, according to CBSChicago.com

The two sides have mutual interest in a deal. Baltimore would acquire Samardzija, who is under team control through next season. The Cubs are scouting the Orioles top pitching prospects, including Kevin Gausman andDylan Bundy. Samardzija has done everything possible to boost his trade value. Through 75 innings, he has a 1.68 ERA.

Hunter Harvey, plz. Eduardo Rodriguez has started slowly in AA, by the way. But just came off the DL with a knee sprain. Bundy is throwing 50 pitch stints, including breaking balls, so he's about ready to face live hitting. Gausman has looked good in AAA.

All in all, they fit our need for pitching better than anyone.

Come onnnn, Gausman and Bundy. Dariel Alvarez might be an interesting guy to have at the tail end of a package too, I wonder how high they on him they are since Urrutia was as good(better peripherally) in AA before really dropping off at AAA and above.

Are you saying Gausman and Bundy, or Gausman or Bundy? If it's and, you take it and run before Duquette's Ambien wears off.

When I said Gausman and Bundy, I meant Gausman and Bundy.

I am 100% ok with giving Bryant an extension/locking him up through all of arbitration. Dude is a monster.

Anyway, I'd love to get a solution at catcher somehow for either Samardzija or Hammel.

I would be thrilled with any 2 of Gausman/Bundy/Harvey and would be OK with one of them, Rodriguez, and Britton.

it's really too bad that they only had but one Jake Arrieta to give us

Maybe we can just skip this step and ask for them to trade for carlos gonzalez first, and then give him to us

It's not that bad.

i just meant from the standpoint that i like 2.70 FIP / 3.11 xFIP pitchers, but that's more of a personal thing, i guess
