I have a feeling we're all gonna be real disappointed with what we get back

Theo either needs to get a solid package in return, or just pay the man. There can't be any of this "disappointed with what we got back" stuff.

He doesn't want to re-sign with us.

He'd do well to keep all his options open, including re-signing with the Cubs. How he feels right now is one thing, but let's see what happens when it comes down to it. I'm not saying you're wrong, or that he's going to re-sign with the Cubs, but it's early yet.

Players used to be open to re-signing or signing as a FA with the Cubs back in the Trib days bc they knew the Cubs overpay at some point. This is no longer the case. Sharks not signing an extension with the Cubs.

This guy's got a bunch of Tweets about a Samardzija trade

The "close"ness. Is he talking Boston or Pitt? Because he mentioned Boston then threw in some "Pitt" guys. Maybe that was just referencing the league's thought on "his cost".

He said the price is an A prospect, an MLB starter and young pitching prospect.

It seems that after talking to sources in Pittsburgh, the consensus is that Boston is "close" to trading for Samardzija. I have a ton of doubts, but Boston is an exciting trade partner to think about.

Why? I love Mookie Betts, but I don't care for any of their pitchers as much as someone like Stroman.

Boston's rotation for the next year+ is pretty fascinating. Right now it's Lester pitching lights out, the two veterans(Lackey/Peavy) pitching okay, and the two younger guys(Buchholz/Doubront) getting smacked around. And of interest to the Cubs, there's at least 6 interesting SP options at AA and above(Owens, Barnes, Webster, Ranaudo, Workman, De La Rosa).

Next year, Lester and Peavy are FA, Lackey gets a huge paycut to the minimum due to him having TJS 3 years ago, and Buchholz is due 12 million to continue alternating between Rich Harden and bad Edwin Jackson. So they have 1, maybe 2 rotation spots secure for next year, about 8 other internal options, and upwards of 40 million dollars in salary coming free(just in the rotation). That's the best(holy options) and worst(how do you sort out that many guys?) flexibility I may have ever seen.

I think Betts would be off limits and not just to us. I'd take Owens, 2 of Barnes/Webster/De La Rosa and JBJ though. Again, doubt they'd do it, but I can see us getting that type of package if no team gives up an A guy.

Yeah, I kind of doubt Lucchino allows a big trade with us.

if the premise is that lucchino wants to stick it to theo, you'd think he'd enjoy rubbing epstein's face in the fact that the red sox are a real team that acquires real players while the cubs just cross their fingers and trade for children

I think the possibility, even if it were slight, that Theo trade rapes the Red Sox, would keep Lucchino from allowing it.

Didn't see this posted. Not much reading between the lines needed here.

What interests me far more is how Samardzija reacted when he was asked a pretty good question about his great performances going for naught, since the Cubs aren’t winning. Is his fantastic start to the season being wasted?

“We’re not wasting anything,” Samardzija told the media after yesterday’s game (here, here, here, here). “I think with modern technology, every game pretty much gets seen and watched. I don’t think it’s any secret with what I’m doing.”

Bruce Miles followed up, asking whether Samardzija was referring to “baseball people and those who matter in the game,” and Samardzija gave him a one word: “Bingo.”

According to the tweet, that was the price during spring training. Also said that we were asking the braves for Hayward or Justin Upton.

I'm sure Lucchino is really worried about losing face to Theo in 2019 when the prospects that he trades for Samardzija finally make it to the ML. Meanwhile, Samardzija helps the Red Sox make the playoffs for 6 straight years after signing an extension.

They're both being silly.

Lucchino isn't shaking his boots over being trade-raped by Theo, and Daniels is already lamenting the Garza deal publicly (granted, Garza only had 2 months left). It definitely wouldn't have to take 5 years for regret to form.

I really think Lucchino's hatred of Theo would mess a deal up with them.

Theo wants to rip Lucchino off... but Lucchino doesn't want to rip Theo off?

I don't think Lucchino could pull it off. Cherington might be able to, but Lucchino would over-involve himself, as has been his wont.

Regardless, I'd be surprised if any substantial business gets done between the Cubs and Sox.

The bottom line is that Lucchino knows what he's getting in Samardzija and I doubt he will feel ripped off assuming Shark's doesn't fall off. The Red Sox aren't desperate enough to make a trade that they aren't comfortable with. Somewhere in the future it might be determined that the Cubs got the better of the deal, but I doubt Lucchino will be too upset if Samardzija gives them 4-5 years of top notch pitching.

good point, that's probably it

Olney makes a reasonable point that San Francisco has a history of midseason acquisitions to improve their playoff odds (Beltran and Pence), so they could be a potential landing spot for Shark.

Are Crick/Susac or Crick/Escobar good enough centerpieces? I can't see them moving all 3. After those guys they have some interesting pitching prospects that would be good fillers.

(I really like both Susac and Escobar, but I would think the Cubs would need Crick's ace ceiling to make the trade.)

I think that the A prospect acquired in the deal needs to have better odds than Crick does of reaching their ceiling or coming close to it.

Yeah, the Giants don't have the players, nor the need really.
